Store shelves picked clean as people panic-buy goods at local supermarkets
Boston Globe ^ | 3/13/20 | Steve Annear

Empty freezers. Cleaned out shelves. Aisles totally empty, as if it were a going out of business sale. The chicken thighs, the frozen broccoli, the toilet paper are all feared missing.

It’s slim pickings these days at supermarkets and convenience stores across the region as people are jamming into aisles to stock up on food, household goods, and cleaning supplies amid rising concerns they’ll be forced to self-quarantine for an extended period of time. As cases of the coronavirus continue to spread, industry experts promise that the virus won’t lead to a break in the food supply chain -- but it was clear in busy groceries Friday that many shoppers would rather be safe than sorry.

“Is this it? The end?” Donna Knowles asked without irony as she became the 26th person in a line that stretched from the cashier deep into the bakery section at the Market Basket in Gloucester early Friday afternoon.

"I just came in to grab a few things, hoping to make a few dinners before I go to work,'' she said, sizing up the line. "I don’t think that’s going to happen.''

"The only way you’re getting any water is if you go down to the ocean and boil it,'' Mike Francis called out to another customer in a different corner of the store as he stocked chips in the snack aisle.

"It’s worse than a blizzard, it’s worse than pre-Thanksgiving,'' Francis, a distributor for Utz snacks, told a reporter. "I’ve never seen anything like this. And it’s like this in every store.”

They just cannot help but remind the folks as to their dislike of the normal American citizenry.

Yes, I figure it will help us, in the long run.

Try some powdered milk. Lasts a long time and tastes good, at least the stuff at Walmart does. Nestie Nido.

Unless powdered milk has improved since my childhood, you couldn't pay enough to drink that stuff. It was gross.

I will maintain to my last breath that this panic was media driven and deliberately so.

Trump got out in front of this just fine. When you have the Governors of CA and NY publicly praising Trump for his actions, you know the Dems have lost this latest attempt to bring him down.

The economy may or may not take a serious hit depending on how long this goes on. But Trump will not be blamed for that because the cause for the slow down can not credibly be placed on Trump.

Unfortunately, they are doing their best to turn this wonderful state Blue.

May the Lord God cause them to fall upon their own vile devices. Amen.

I may actually try some! I can remember powdered milk decades (decades, I say!) ago and it was horrendous.

Will look for that brand!

I do not blame the media. The clueless, intellectually unwashed, sheeple are the ones creating their own supply crisis. Wife and I have not purchased a single food item or staple in over a week.

We already had a stash of tp (the hubby routinely gets it on sale) and well stocked on tissues. It’s just us two, and I am used to cooking at home, stretching meals, freezing, making homemade laundry detergent. Been trying to learn from the general before ours for a while now.

"What happens when the cashiers and stockers stop going to work?"

They do work up close with customers. If we don't get a break with anti-viral environmental conditions or containment, many of the older ones will drop like flies. Most of the younger ones will be sick and quarantined. They need to be trained and outfitted like Ebola medics.

"I was at Lowe’s this morning buying some stuff for the house and one such Ewe was having her eunuch husband grab as much Lysol and Clorox products as they can. SMH"

Yes, that's weird. Probably the drug culture.

One bottle of bleach will go a long way for cleaning counters and the like. It should be mixed with water at 3/4 cups per gallon of water for that. Makes over 20 gallons of cleaner, which is more than 90 typical spray bottles (28 oz., from garden supply) full of surface cleaner.

[Not really quite a gallon of bleach in a bottle these days. I have one here that contained 121 ounces when new.]

Not smart to threaten a cornered animal.

Next guy might be packing and feel justified in eliminating a threat.
