Store shelves picked clean as people panic-buy goods at local supermarkets
Boston Globe ^ | 3/13/20 | Steve Annear

Empty freezers. Cleaned out shelves. Aisles totally empty, as if it were a going out of business sale. The chicken thighs, the frozen broccoli, the toilet paper are all feared missing.

It’s slim pickings these days at supermarkets and convenience stores across the region as people are jamming into aisles to stock up on food, household goods, and cleaning supplies amid rising concerns they’ll be forced to self-quarantine for an extended period of time. As cases of the coronavirus continue to spread, industry experts promise that the virus won’t lead to a break in the food supply chain -- but it was clear in busy groceries Friday that many shoppers would rather be safe than sorry.

“Is this it? The end?” Donna Knowles asked without irony as she became the 26th person in a line that stretched from the cashier deep into the bakery section at the Market Basket in Gloucester early Friday afternoon.

"I just came in to grab a few things, hoping to make a few dinners before I go to work,'' she said, sizing up the line. "I don’t think that’s going to happen.''

"The only way you’re getting any water is if you go down to the ocean and boil it,'' Mike Francis called out to another customer in a different corner of the store as he stocked chips in the snack aisle.

"It’s worse than a blizzard, it’s worse than pre-Thanksgiving,'' Francis, a distributor for Utz snacks, told a reporter. "I’ve never seen anything like this. And it’s like this in every store.”

“school cafeterias around here will be feeding the kids! I’m amazed that they can cancel classes, but they will still feed the kids. so food is still being bought for the schools and parents may not know that they could just drop them off for breakfast and lunch... Wasn’t the point of all this staying isolated???”

That was the idea. People are supposed to stay apart, not gather for lunch. This is not like a snow day where families out after the snow melts. Should be keeping kids/families out of malls, theaters, McDonalds (and other restaurants’) play areas, no play dates, etc. The meal thing is rather stupid unless it is grab and go.

But I bet more people got some than the people buying it all up to make money on shortages they create...

I don’t think anybody’s panicking, or few on here are, anyway. This stuff can severely affect up to 20% percent of its victims - I’m guessing more like 10% over here, due to our healthier baseline and younger average age. Even that leaked paper that say we’ll have 96 million cases predicts that only 4.8 million of them (FIVE percent) will be severe and 480,000 (only TEN percent of the severe cases) will die. So the “everybody panic” paper actually seems to be more optimistic than I am.

Denatured alcohol (in the paint or camping department) is good for disinfecting surfaces (NOT for skin).

May be some left at hardware stores.

The real question and the one PROVING this is a wholly manufactured hype is the fact NOTHING at all was reported even minutely resembling this nonsense when the H1N1 virus killed 12,000 and sickened millions in 2009.

Every year one flu or another spreads around the world and yet the media said nothing. Can you not understand what is going on here?

I went to Kroger to buy milk, not tp or water or cleaning supplies, just milk. All of it was gone. I tried Sam’s and Aldi - same story. Who the heck is hoarding milk?
_______

I went to 3 stores before I found non-blackened bananas. I was thinking the same thing.

Yes. My brother said the Indianapolis schools are closed — for learning. They’re still serving food. Which means people still are congregating.

For teachers ... nice work if you can get it.

Every year one flu or another spreads around the world and yet the media said nothing. Can you not understand what is going on here?

You nailed it Billyboy. "Same $hit different flies"

Coronavirus is nothing to sneeze at. But so far, widespread panic may not be justified.

You should know:

Obviously, this is a fast-moving news target. For the latest information from the government, you can visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) coronavirus page at CDC.gov. The following information is accurate as of Thursday.

Q: What is the average American's risk of getting coronavirus?

A: Low. CDC reports: "For the majority of people, the immediate risk of being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to be low."

Q: What's the likelihood that coronavirus is in my community?

A: Low. CDC reports: "There is not widespread circulation in most communities in the United States."

Q: How many coronavirus deaths have there been in the U.S.?

A: So far, not many. CDC reports 36 deaths. Adding various news reports, the number could be about 40 and growing. Although one death is too many, the reported deaths are among 43 states (including the District of Columbia) reporting outbreaks since January in a population of more than 327 million people.

Q: How many young people have died of coronavirus in the U.S.?

A: So far, there are no reports of deaths among young people in the U.S. The U.S. Surgeon General reports the average age of people who have died from coronavirus in the U.S. is 80. Additionally, he says those who are most impacted have chronic, serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease.

Q: Who has died so far?

A. These were compiled using CDC reports plus news and local health department reports:

Q: How many people have recovered?

A: News reports say that in China alone, out of 80,000 diagnosed, nearly 60,000 have already recovered. However, the true number of recovered is likely far higher since most of those who get the virus have mild or no symptoms, and so are not diagnosed at all.

Q: Why have there been so many coronavirus deaths in Italy?

A: Italy has reported 827 coronavirus deaths. Experts say the high number is partly because Italy has more residents in the vulnerable age category. Italy has the oldest population in Europe and more elderly per capita than the U.S. Most of the Italian deaths are in patients in their 80s and 90s. In addition, Italy has a great number of direct China contacts. Italy was the first to join China?s ?silk road? economic partnership project. The coronavirus is believed to have originated in China. Italy?s 827 deaths are out of a population of 60 million people. Even though one death is too many, it is still a small relative number.

Q: Why am I hearing so many different fatality rates?

A: Experts say all coronavirus death rates are nothing more than estimates at the moment. That's because it is impossible to know how many people have or had the virus. And that total number is needed to calculate an accurate rate. What makes it more difficult is the fact that most people have few or no symptoms, and so it is impossible to count them.

Some current death rates that sound high are being calculated in a particular age group. The rate will be highest among the elderly and, in the U.S., there have been zero deaths among people age 50 and under. Some death rates are being calculated as deaths among the sickest patients, those are diagnosed and treated, which will produce a much higher number than a more accurate death rate that takes into consideration those patients who are infected but do not become ill at all

OMGOSH. Billyboy15. You sound like a Bernie Bro; deciding who gets to stay on a website and who is not worthy of it simply because they panic.

May you never, ever, make a foolish mistake and be held to the High/Mighty Standard.

Many, and I do mean MANY of us were foolish at one time or the other and thankfully had folks who were wiser and kinder and walked us through our mistakes instead of being driven off like diseased animals.

Goodniiiiiiiight, fella. You’re usually a bit wiser.

They were busy protecting Obozo the Incompetent back then, and the Swine Flu also killed between 12,000 and 20,000 Americans out of the sixty million infected (a rate of no more than 0.033 percent).

On the other hand, estimates of the death rate for WuFlu cases (those identified) range between 2 and 3 percent. If you count the deaths as a percentage of resolved cases, it goes up to about 7%. Dr. Fauci seems to think when the asymptomatic and mild cases - most of which presumably are not even counted - are factored in, the death rate in existing cases (not necessarily resolved cases) will be about 1%. If that holds as the cases all get resolved, that will still be at least 30 times as deadly in America as swine flu was.

It is not contradictory to believe both that this mess is serious and also that the leftoids in the media are hyping it up to bring Trump down.
