A British man once struck down by coronavirus has described how the horror symptoms of the deadly disease almost killed him. Simon Parker, 47, thought he was suffering from a common cold when he fell ill on Boxing Day in 2016. But he became severely ill over the next few days and by New Year's Eve couldn't even breathe - forcing him to desperately call 999. He was taken from his home in Kingswear, Devon, to a hospital where he was put into an induced coma.

Wow, even beyond my prepping. I’m not into washing/sanitizing scene (yet), but I’m now fully prepped for it. One option you may want to consider is also spraying alcohol/bleach on food and other supplies (obviously without poisoning yourself).

The disease continues to spread, though. If we get enough food, paper items and other necessities to last a couple of months, we won’t all be meeting at the stores in a rush at the same time and infecting each other as much. Stocking up now will also give the retailers a heads-up and time to get more freight.

If the epidemic doesn’t move in on us, we’ll still be alright. We can spend some time around home, get outdoors and get some exercise for a change.

“She said it was a rare virus called coronavirus”

Wikipedia says:

“Coronaviruses are believed to cause a significant percentage of all common colds in human adults and children”

“There are seven strains of coronavirus”

I was using language that conspiracy theorists understand.

You got me thinking too about the false panics. I did prep for Y2k, false alarm. I always heard about how the CFR and “The FED” are going to conspire to put me in slavery...still waiting for the chains and whippings.

But I also remember a case where I was in an absolute panic, but everyone (virtually everyone) else said that I was nuts, and that was the 2 years leading up to mortgage meltdown. For that, I had gotten out of the stock market, and actually shorted financial stocks (including Countrywide, which I rode right to the bottom), so I made enough to buy a nice car in 2008, while others went broke and often lost their homes.

The reason for my panic then (but not prior, Y2k was just some elevated concern) was not because of what people saying - as they were saying just the opposite: “nothing to worry about, Bob”. It was because I was pulling mortgage loan paper off the Internet for Naples, Florida, and it was showed Exploding Loan after Exploding Loan (Option ARMs, they called them,...interest rate would nearly triple at the 5-year mark, but people were being qualified at the low, teaser, rate). I saw the data, made my call independently (these could NEVER be paid back per their terms), and I was right (that time). For other things, like the FED/CFR ‘conspiracy’, nothing ever made sense, so I ignored it. At this point, other than Coronavirus, I still believe a day of reckoning will come because of our deficit/debt, but who knows when?

The normalcy bias here is so shocking sometimes.

Try one of the old fashioned bar soaps that don’t have detergents and other odd chemicals in them. Your hands and body will feel better and not as dry. A family member researches such things and bought some Kirk’s Castille soap. It’s good and makes lots of bubbles.

Yes, I carry hand sanitizer in the car, too. Some hand lotion will seal the pores a little after drying the hands and wrists out, by the way. ...a little prophylactic protection there. I like the more neutral, non-stinky stuff.

What makes sense to me is plan for the worst but hope for the best.

I became concerned when I saw the way the Chinese government was handling this rather untypical flu...

I live 40 minutes from ORD—and from what I have seen, there is not an n95 mask to be found in any of the box stores in my town...

What masks are still available online have significant price increases...

I have a family member doing grad work in infectious disease/infection control...They are concerned, but not panicking...

“I have a family member doing grad work in infectious disease/infection control...They are concerned, but not panicking...”

I was just thinking about that. My plan had been to panic starting on Feb 12. But, at this point, I’m just heavy prep. I may even put off the Feb 12th date.

(by the way, ‘panic’ means hunkering down at home...no more working until it’s safe again)

Probably most of the materials used in his hospital treatment were produced in China. IV bags, tubing and solutions, intubation equipment, sterile syringes, gloves, isolation gear, medications, oxygen masks ...

I wonder how big our national stockpile is. And how many years it would take to bring our own factories on line and producing.

Britain’s National Health Service’s section on coronavirus doesn’t contradict the Wikipedia section.
