Senate impeachment trial: Republicans vote to kill Democratic amendments seeking documents via Party-line Vote
CNN ^ | 01/21/2020

Senate Republicans defeated a series of amendments from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to subpoena the Trump administration for Ukraine documents on the opening day of the bitterly fought impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

Schumer offered several measures seeking a trove of documents from the White House, the State Department and the Office of Management and Budget that the Trump administration refused to turn over during the House's impeachment inquiry, but the amendments were thwarted one by one on 53-47, party-line votes. At around 7:30 p.m. ET, Schumer introduced his fourth amendment subpoenaing testimony from acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.

Schumer's amendments are part of an effort from Democrats in both the House and Senate to attack the resolution laying out the rules of the trial, which puts off a decision about seeking witnesses and documents until after opening statements are given and senators have a chance to ask questions of the House impeachment managers and the President's legal team. The debate over the trial rules played out after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell decided to alter the trial resolution shortly before it gaveled in Tuesday, amid concerns from key Senate Republicans and an uproar from Democrats.

The new resolution will give the House impeachment managers and the President's team three days each to make their 24 hours of trial arguments, instead of two as McConnell had initially proposed. There were also changes to the section of the resolution that would not have admitted the House's evidence without a vote — now, evidence will be admitted automatically unless there is a motion from the President's team to throw out evidence.

But the changes did little to satisfy Democrats in either chamber, who have accused McConnell and Senate Republicans of working with the President to rush through

Will the real Joe Manchin please stand up.

And... Doug Jones' vote duly noted.

Nancy is a political cartoonist’s dream. Her tongue-kissing Schiff would be great under the caption “Partisan Passion,” too.

Read Chapter 4 of Solzhenytsin’s Gulag Archepelago, entitled Blue Caps. Many Dem activists dream of becoming interrogators for the new American Gulag that they dearly long for.

No it’s not. They agreed to a deal a day or so ago. The amendments nonsense was just a waste of time to get people on record. The deal was about the process and all they did was put that in place. Amendments would break the deal. Now once they go through the process they’ll vote again on witnesses and there you’ll see the cracks.

Dems know that Trump will not be convicted, but they are busy making 2020 campaign ads using impeachment votes against senators in purple states. I suspect that’s why McC compromised on the format of the proceedings last night. He didn’t want to antagonize squishy R senators.

Not yet! At least one Moron (like as in the tabernacle choir type) will vote to impeach. Bet on it! (I did)

“That’s a good sign that the Republicans are holding together.”

Note that there’s never any doubt with Democrats.

“That’s a good sign that the Republicans are holding together. RINO’s, Never Trumpers, sore losers, none are stabbing us in the back yet.”

they have no choice if they want the GOP to survive as a viable political party: the GOP Senate *HAS* to stick together to demonstrate that the Dem impeachment is nothing but a partisan hack job, AND in no way can the GOP Senate allow even the tiniest little crack for the Dems to wedge their way into turning their partisan farce into a trial that becomes an unlimited circus of bullshit that drags on for months ...

the GOP party either binds together or it falls together under this unprecedented attack by the Dems on the GOP leader, chief GOP fund-raiser and chief GOP vote-getter, and ALL of these Senators get that! ... a few will makes noises like they’re open to this or that as a “possibility”, yada, yada, yada, but bottom line they’re all gonna vote in lockstep purely as a means of self-survival ...

He wants to run for the Rat Prez nomination in 2024.
Acting all independent & conservative won’t help with the Rat party faithful. He has to show his leftist side!

“The longer the circus goes on, the less time Dem candidates have to campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire, and the more the spotlight is on Joe Biden, whose corruption gets further highlighted by this circus, especially if the Dems dare not mention it, and the Republicans can and should as often as possible. This is a slomo train wreck.”

correctamundo ... and Jo Bidn would make a HORRIBLE nominee against Trump ... of course, so would bernie or liz, though i suspect liz would have a better chance at more votes than bernie or bidn ... at any rate, bernie is probably the one being hurt the most by this, because he has the momentum (though not the absolute poll leader), the most fund-raising, and a large coterie of truth-believers ...

could you enlighten the rest of us with some links that demonstrate that actually happened?

Ironically, if it hadn’t been for Blowy and the impeachment circus, for all anyone knew, Barr would have quietly empaneled a grand jury and investigated, using information coming from Ukraine, and either indicted Biden or concluded there was no there there. Thanks to this circus, even if he were elected Joe would be haunted by this controversy for all of his term.

Fortunately, that wouldn’t have happened anyway. If Joe is the nominee, he’ll be sliced, diced and pureed by Trump. The only dirt he needed was Biden’s video openly bragging about his corrupt bullying of Ukraine, and the fact that his low-life son was getting sinecures everywhere he went. Even without that, Trump would run rings around him while he figures out which state he’s in and when he was VP, and Obama openly disses him.

Too much work, I’m on a phone. The deal was widely reported though. It was just a deal on getting the process started (The vote that happened last night). Yesterday’s outcome was already known because of the deal. The reason things took so long is because the system is nonsensical.
