The NCAA Board of Governors has taken the first step toward allowing athletes to cash in on their fame. The board voted unanimously on Tuesday to clear the way for the amateur athletes to benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness.

They see the trend, want to have some input into the change
Great news.
Let these kids make money off their skill sets and their own name.
California forced their hand. On this issue I agree with California
Thanks for the post.
I agree completely.
Why is it that the NCAA has to be dragged kicking and screaming into reality and fairness?
You beat my post by a couple of minutes LOL!!!!
The author with the fewest responses owes the Freepathon a $20 donation.
I’m fine with them making money off their likenesses, etc. HOWEVER, any money they earn should go to pay off their scholarship money first.
They had no choice.
Congress was getting ready to cram this down their piehole.
The trend is that the ridiculous pretense that their highly compensated athletes are amateurs hasn’t been plausible for a long time and their incoplete and extremely intermittent attempts to enforce amateur status just make the whole organization look well, look as as corrupt as it has always been.
College sports should have followed Howard Cossel’s advice in the seventies and formed AAA professional teams owned by the universities and run things above board.
Because the NCAA has been cashing in on the athletes fame for decades. Didn't want any competition.
They already get $50K or more a year (tuition, room and board plus money). I agree, pay off this above and it’s all good.
Ok.....then start raising academic records for admission and eligibility
I’m not interested in watching marginal or less “students” make $$$ when they wouldn’t have been admitted otherwise
Let them go juco or small school and then transfer if they give a damn about academics
Ok.....then start raising academic records for admission and eligibility.
Every school has that option.
Good. Now make them pay for their college - no more free rides.
I get the pros of the issue but I think sports as we know it is dying. So whats next, the unionizing of college players? We will soon hear about women and their pay “inequality”. So if this is going to happen,we need to eliminate scholarships and these athletes can just get their “living wage”.
Of the big 4 sports in the US/Canada the two oldest, baseball and hockey, developed pro leagues and farm leagues before they became big college sports and these have survived to this day, (minor league baseball and junior hockey).
The other 2 sports, football and basketball, were big college sports before they became big pro sports and hence a suitable farm league system never developed. Both sports are mostly happy to see the existing system continue as it would be difficult to build equivalent minor leagues from scratch.
Sounds reasonable to me, since it is the scholarship and university that is making their 'fame' possible.
If they have 4 - 1 year scholarships they’ve already fulfilled their commitment for the completed seasons. If you want to get rid of athletic scholarships entirely that’s fine with me.
A free education, 5years at the college, and all expenses are paid, and they claim the aren’t paid, BS.
This is the end of college football.
Logistics in football don’t led itself to a farm league.(See all failed alternative leagues tried) Cost is the #1 prohibitive factor, you have 50+ man rosters, Baseball and Hockey have 1/2 of that and you have more trainers, equipment costs, medical staff, etc in football than both those sports. Plus to sound all patrician about football. People just won’t go to see farm league talent in football for the game’s sake(See basketball also). Farm league baseball and hockey are light years behind NHL and MLB talent. What .75% of MLB farm guys ever make it to the Show. People on a hot Summer afternoon will pay $15 and $4 for a hotdog to watch baseball, even if it’s played sloppily. Same goes for hockey. Football, no way. College football is a different animal, it has cultural roots in America and a regional pride by it’s fan bases. College hockey and baseball are sports between football and basketball season.
