Democratic state legislators urged Pittsburghers on Thursday to support a bill that would ban the use of some military-style rifles by everyone except service members and law enforcement personnel.
The lawmakers also said hunters in Pennsylvania dont need the added firepower of semiautomatic rifles, including AR-15-type weapons, even though the Legislature passed a law in 2017 allowing that.
The weapons increasingly are being used in mass killings that are traumatizing todays children, said state Rep. Ed Gainey, D-Lincoln-Lemington, at a gathering sponsored by House Democrats at the Carnegie Library in Homewood.
He and others called for support of a bill that would ban some of the military-style weapons in the state.
They were part of a House Democrats series called Plan4PA. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald also attended, urging the state House to move forward on universal background checks, extreme risk protection or red flag laws, and banning assault weapons. Also in attendance were state Rep. Sara Innamorato, D-Lawrenceville, and Katie Leslie of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
Allegheny County Chief Medical Examiner Karl Williams gave a graphic description of the damage caused by the .223-caliber slug fired by AR-15-type rifles, explaining that it has more muzzle velocity than rounds fired by many other types of long guns.
Mr. Williams said he observed the horrific wounds inflicted by the AR-15 used by accused gunman Robert Bowers in last years attack that left 11 people dead at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill.
State Rep. Summer Lee, D-Swissvale, decried the use of those weapons by hunters, saying, Game can be killed with normal rifles, so saying they are needed for hunting is no excuse.

'We are raising a nation of young people...with PTSD': Rep. Gainey appeals for statewide ban on assault weapons
(The Post-Gazette appears to be trying to compete with the Daily Mail for title length)
‘We are raising a nation of young people...with PTSD’
That’s the plan, isn’t it?
If not weapons, then global “warming”
Anything to terrify the kids into being dedicated to The Party, and slaves to the state.
Ed Gainey is a smelly Obama
It is the media tramentizing everyone
They’re coming for our guns, Pennsylvania Edition.
Combined PING! and BANG! (for the bang_list).
It’s amazing how they allow gangs to rule Chicago, but place the blame for PTSD on the guns, and not hoodlums.
I realize Gainey isn’t there, but by example Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. How did that stop gang violence? Well, it didn’t.
Now he wants more laws for Pittsburgh that hoodlums won’t abide by.
The goal is clearly an unarmed populace so that the local to federal government can walk in and abridge our rights at will.
Gainey is another person that can’t think himself out of a paper bag.
My hope is that we take the House back and issue some laws that deny cities, counties, and states the right to infringe on OUR Second Amendment.
I also want a national conceal carry no city, county, or state can object to. Watch the crime drop then. The Left will be totally flummoxed.
“It’s for the chilluns!”
There must be a ton of lemmings in Lincoln-Lemington.
Wait, he's actually their medical examiner? (He's certainly not a deer hunter.)
Maybe not, but what does that have to do with the second amendment?
The lawmakers also said hunters in Pennsylvania dont need the added firepower of semiautomatic rifles, including AR-15-type weapons,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, that’s a whole lotta stupid in one sentence.
First, unless it is the rare .50 caliber AR-15 with the high magazine clip, a .223 is not allowed for deer hunting around here.
Second, a .223 round is just a powerful coming out of my Ruger #1 single shot as it is in a semiautomatic.
My AR works well shooting a running coyote with my laying hen in it’s mouth.
I need my AR.
It is a tool like a hammer.
Until they convince the coyotes to leave my chickens alone, leave me be.
Im not familiar with laws in Pennsylvania but the AR plateform is available from .22 and up, go to AR 10 and the top is .308 and larger. My personal favorite is my 6.5 Grendel which I built. Guns dont kill people. People kill people If your not shooting people why should you be punished? Just saying.
The AR is a rednecks Barbie Doll. Shell dress up any way you want her too and show some real class. How ever she dresses it will be fun when you bring her to the dance/range. IMO
Every single shot, lever action, bolt action, and semi auto rifle on the market today were fashioned after a military firearm.
Is it too much to ask for some on the left to kick their politicians in the ass and educate them about firearms.
IIRC, in Pennsylvania semi-auto’s can be possessed but cannot be used for hunting. Handguns carried in the field must be revolvers only.
Yet another example of how the hateful James Carvile described the Keystone State as bounded by Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, with Alabama in the middle. He did not intend it as a compliment.
Whenever some oily politican intones “you don’t neeeeeeeeeeed an AR-15”, that’s when you d@mn well do.
Don’t tell us “peons” what we do or do not neeeeeeeeeeed, Gainey, you arrogant presumptuous bastard!!
From the PA Constitution
Article I; Section 21: The Right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned.
No ambiguity there at all.
You can use semi-autos for certain game animals. I use my .22 semi-auto for squirrel and woodchucks and my AR-15 for coyote. Semi-autos aren’t allowed for deer hunting though. .223/5.56 is an excellent round for coyote.
They are semi-automatic rifles intended for the civilian market, and, according to FBI statistics, ALL rifles, including semi-automatics, cause fewer deaths per year than hammers, fist, feet, etc.
So pound sand, Gainey.
I would add # 3, the Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting.
It’s purpose is to give the citizens a means to overthrow a tyrannical government should one ever come into power. Gainey is clueless.
