The ‘Never Trump’ Coalition That Decided Eh, Never Mind, He’s Fine

WASHINGTON — In 2016, Erick Erickson could not have been clearer. Donald Trump was “a racist” and “a fascist.” It was no wonder, Mr. Erickson wrote, that “so many people with swastikas in their Twitter profile pics” supported him. “I will not vote for Donald Trump. Ever,” he insisted, adding his voice to the chorus of Never Trump Republicans.

Last week, Mr. Erickson, a well-known conservative blogger, titled one of his pieces “I Support the President.” In three years, he had come completely around, a transformation that is a testament to President Trump’s remarkable consolidation of support inside the Republican Party. The effort to impeach the president, Mr. Erickson wrote, was a desperate move by people “who have never come to terms with him.”

“Never Trump” no more, conservatives have largely resigned themselves to a more accommodating state of mind: “Never mind Trump.” And their change in attitude helps to mute the much smaller group of conservative voices who remain highly critical of the president and have questioned his conduct.

Glenn Beck, the radio host who once called Mr. Trump “an immoral man who is absent decency or dignity,” now says that his defeat in 2020 would mark “the end of the country as we know it.” Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who so bitterly feuded with the president during the 2016 primaries that Mr. Trump gave out Mr. Graham’s cellphone number on national television, declared last week that impeachment was nothing but “a political setup.”

The MSM plan to fracture the Right is not working.
Expect the panic to get much worse in 3 months.

Ann Coulter is bipolar. She might sound like a supporter but that can change in the blink of an eye.

Yep, just depends what she thinks will sell her monthly new book.

“The “Never Trump” taint still lingers three and a half years later. National Review’s editor, Rich Lowry, said that, regrettably, that week’s magazine was remembered as the “Never Trump” issue. “I wish they’d never come up with that phrase,” he said. “

““Had I known this was going to be perceived as the bible of the anti-Trump movement, I never would have written it,” said L. Brent Bozell III, who in his National Review essay wrote, “Trump might be the greatest charlatan of them all.””

shows what a moron you were, Brent, and presumably still are, since usually once a moron, always a moron ...

you see, the average FReeper knew that Trump was the real deal within a week of him walking down the elevator, while all of you True Conservative™ nattering nabobs of negativism pundit putzes were too filled with self-importance to see what was plain as day right in front of your collective noses ...

Her hot button is illegal immigration, anything she interprets as Trump compromise she goes nonlinear. Maybe its just to sell book, don’t care! She’s right on this!
How many here would do a Anne Coulter if Trump went soft on illegal immigration? Many! It’s the only way Trump loses his current grip on the GOP & “independent” rank & file.
So as far as I am concerned Anne can keep the pressure on.

So was Mark Levin. Early on.

I wasn’t a Trump fan early on. Never thought this boisterous billionaire would be a defender of the working class and our country.

Glad to be wrong.

I was NEVER as ‘Never Trump’ as Erickson. I though Erik had lost his mind. But, I was not fully aboard the Trump train until he won the primary. I’ve told many of my European co-workers that Trump was my 17th choice among the Republican field. That is hyperbole: he was actually by 3rd or 4th choice,”. But, over Hillary ? He was an EASY choice. They all understand, and mostly agree with that.

After watching him in action for three years? I thank God for him. He’s exceeded all my best hopes. If there is to be a fight this time ? I’m ready for it.

“He’s got something now that he didn’t have in 2016: a record.”

absolutely! Many who voted for Trump were trepidatious about whether he meant what he said and/or whether he could or would keep his promises (i for one never had any doubt about any of it). But now, it’s evident to anyone paying attention that President Trump has fulfilled more specific campaign promises than any President in U.S. history, and has accomplished in three years more than almost any President in U.S. history, so no more trepidation about voting for him in 2020. In fact, trepidation has turned into certitude and evangelization.

“this article actually makes me feel good...I saw my brother and his wife BOTH MAJOR ANTI TRUMPERS,spewing crap everywhere about how awful Trump is, to now realizing this man has been the best thing this country has seen in regards to actually caring about America and what is best for her citizens. I believe they would crawl over broken glass to vote for him. WHat changed his mind? Well, of course, the President didn’t just talk the talk, HE WALKED IT!”

that is a very telling AND heart-warming anecdote ... My gut says that what described has happened many hundreds of thousands of times over the last three years ...

Sad thread, although I notice none of the FR Never Trumpers have weighed in now that their gods, Lowry and Bozell and Erickson, are regretting their short-sighted stupidity. Where are they?

I was in NYC during Trumps rebuilding era. He was boisterous but he did a great job. No one ever complained about working for home he never had a dishonesty claim against home (if he had it would have been all over the news)

So he had ex wives. I’m not gonna marry him.

I heard from him from time to time on Savage and on Hannity since then through the presidential races. He always opined on how the corruption was keeping us down and getting is further into trouble He was sincerely concerned as a citizen. I don’t discount him as a fellow citizen just because he has money. And if you go on Savage to discuss politics you have to be sincere or he’ll call you out in a deserved rough way. No one does it. Trump did

Then people complained that he had money from his father. Wha? His father was a successful businessman well respected. I have an aunt who is near 100 lives in Brooklyn in the same house she grew up in. She said trump Sr was very well regarded

Trump took 200 million and a Wharton school of Finance and turned it into 9 billion or so. Can people not add? It’s simple math

No they are allowed to hate wealthy people. They enjoy it. Makes them feel good. Who’s the real lover of money there. Envy. Blinding

People who close their ears to Hannity (for his conservative views) and Savage (for the same) missed something very important. Trump.

He is out for getting the country on track. Always was.

We didn’t really know what we might get with Trump as president, but we were willing to take a chance that he would keep his campaign promises. The so-called conservative Never Trumpers would have been fine with Hillary as president (Jeb would not have beaten her). What a nightmare she would have been, but all the Never Trumpers would have been booked solid on TV and radio expressing their “outrage” about her. They probably would have sold lots of books and magazines too, while the country and Americans suffered.

There are a whole load of replies upthread from Freepers whole have worked overtime to delude themselves into thinking they ‘know’ Ann.

Obviously they don’t.

You are dead-on right with your post.
