Israeli President Reuven Rivlin will tap Likud Chair and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for the task of forming a ruling coalition, after meeting Wednesday evening with Netanyahu and his main challenger, Blue and White Chair Benny Gantz.
The announcement comes after Rivlin received the official election results earlier Wednesday and as he encourages Gantz and Netanyahu to form a unity government.

He has 28 days to do it with a possible two week extension. If he fails, then Benny Gantz would get the nod.
Excellent. I think that is what Netanyahu offered earlier.
I hope they do it and it will be a success.
The Likud picked up a seat after the final election results were posted. They now have 32 to Kachol Lavans 33.
Not good for Netanyahu. When he fails, the pressure will be on Netanyahu to make concessions to allow Gantz to head unity government.
For Bibi to make a unity government now with Gantz would require Bibi screwing his current coalition partners right after he got them to unite behind him. If Gantz proposes it, Bibi can just say he had no choice.
He got the first nod because the right wing bloc has 56 seats. The negotiations are going to be long and difficult.
Its possible no one can form a government and the country would be headed to a third round of elections in January.
Yes.
Third election, or unity government without Netanyahu look like the alternatives.
If Lieberman wasnt resistant to sitting with the religious parties, a right wing government of 64 could be formed.
Netanyahu has a few options. He can try to peel off some MKs from Labor, Democratic Union or Yisrael Beitenu to get himself a majority coalition.
Rabin did it in the 90s and faithless politicians could be found willing to betray their voters for a ministerial post and a lifetime pension.
The name of the game is power and nothing is being ruled out in forming a new government.
That one-mandate gap was what he had in 2008 against Tzipi Livni, and he still got to form the coalition then, too. So many years, so little has changed, except Tzipi dwells in the back benches where she belongs. Gantz may well be a contender. I do not like the prospect of Liberman as kingmaker. But he may be needed to reach the magic number 61, and I’d much rather have a unity government than have so much hanging on the whims of a congenital opportunist.
Which is why Im surprised Netanyahu hasnt screwed his coalition partners and gone unity, or Likud ditching Netanyahu to make a unity government.
All the minor parties could be frozen out and all the major players get a bigger piece of the pie.
We will keep praying for Netanyahu and Israel; knowing the major Israeli media are just as Leftist as our own.
The two big parties have enough seats between them so Liebermans blackmail isnt even a factor. If they want to freeze him out they can.
Likud would like a deal but not at the expense of leaving its natural coalition partners out in the cold.
Well have to see how it plays out.
Can anyone tell me what’s so bad about Benny Gantz being Prime Minister ( if in case, God forbid, Netanyahu fails )?
By all accounts, Gantz is right of center, is not a socialist and being a former General in the military, isn’t weak on terror. The only question is how his relationship with Trump will be like... but by all accounts, the man isn’t anti-American.
Lieberman already folded once as I predicted ... twice will be no surprise ... as it will be no surprise when he agrees to YB sitting with the religious parties. Better to be Defense Minister and prosecute a Gaza Campaign than be frozen out with Benny.
For Christs sake, Bobos major domo Joel Benenson ran Bennys campaign.
I pray for Israel, I hope that Bibi wins, but if he doesn't, I really save my prayers for Donald John Trump, President of the United States of America.
Gantz has no record on social issues or economics, and has promised a referendum on disengagement from Islamic areas.
Netanyahu has never been decisive at dealing with Islamic violence, and has backed off free market economic reforms that he was once known for. So Gantz generally would make little difference in most policies, although Gantz alliance with the Lapid crowd means certainly more social liberalism and rollback of economic reforms. But those issues havent played much role in the election. The issue is Netanyahu personally.
WINNING IS AT 23,470% AND RISING!!!

whats wrong with Gantz?
he’s aligned with SJW sockchucker Lapid
he couldn’t keep his vows to his wife, means he would sell out his country.
he was stupid enough to get his phone hacked by Iran, including his texts to his mistress DURING THE CAMPAIGN.
The guy is a schmuck.
Bibi isn’t perfect. Gantz-Lapid are worse.
Thanks goldstategop. Fake fans of Benny Gantz hardest hit!
