Maine tops ‘safest states’ rankings four years after removing major gun restriction

AUGUSTA – When Maine passed a “Constitutional Carry” law allowing Maine residents to carry a concealed firearm without any special permit in 2015, opponents of the law forecast a dangerous future for the state. They said the new law would hurt public safety and put Maine kids at risk.

One state representative who opposed the bill went so far as to say it would give Mainers a reason to be afraid every time they went out in public or to work.

Another state representative suggested the law would lead to violent criminals with recent arrests and convictions legally carrying handguns.

Putting the rights of Mainers ahead of the objections of opponents, Governor Paul LePage signed the bill sponsored by Senator Eric Brakey of Auburn after it won bipartisan approval in the Maine House and Senate.

Now four years later, Maine has been named the safest state in the nation according to US News and World Report’s public safety rankings, which measures the fifty states based on crime data.

Another factor they don’t mention is that Maine is not a very diverse state. 95% white and barely 1% of the most dangerous race.

"...four years later, Maine has been named the safest state in the nation..."

I wonder what their ranking was before they passed constitutional carry?

...

I assume it was very good.

The Left was saying that constitutional carry would make crime much worse. It didn’t.

“...The winters are not quite that bad....”
Shhhhhh...don’t tell anybody...LOL
I was born and raised there. Weather changes on a dime. Been deer hunting on Thanksgiving Day in a t-shirt. The next day, 20 degrees with 8” of snow on the ground. I’ve seen it snow every month of the year except July & August (not all in one year). Flipped hamburgers at one 4th of July family cookout....in a winter parka (48 degrees with a brisk breeze). On the other hand, I’ve sweated like a pig in August with humid 85-90 degree heat and no air conditioning....usually headed over to Cutler or Eastport on those hot days to get a breath of cool ocean air. Last winter was mild compared to the year before. Lots of snow that previous year. Summer was late coming this year. Pretty cool weather right up thru June.
My senior year (1973) at UMO had 2-3 weeks where we hardly ever saw a day above zero. When it finally warmed up to about 35, it felt like a heat wave...lol. It was enough for me to get a job waaaaay to the south when I got out. Happiness was that cold-azz, mosquito/black fly-ridden place in the rear view mirror. Now, after living/working in heavily populated areas and really hot climates for years, I love going back there.

I didn't find the statistic for 2017, but in 2016 Prince Edward Island, the smallest province (about 150,000 population) had no murders and no attempted murders.

That works out to 0.0 per 100,000 people

“...Trump carried the Second District (which covers 80% of the state) by 10 points and received one electoral vote as a result.
This is Second Amendment country, to be sure....”
Absolutely. When you see Trump banners flying off the masts of lobster boats in Eastport, ME, you know the libs are in trouble there....LOL

Vermont has had Constitutional Carry forever.

Their low Crime Rate is either due to that or the FACT that Vermont is the Whitest State in the Union.

I’m sure Bernie Sanders could figure it out.

As a Free Citizen of the State of MS, I concur.

Constitutional Carry for every American Citizen!

When they passed the Law here, the naysayers were using the tried and untrue “it will be just like the Wild West” BS.

As I noted on a local 2A/gun forum on FB, the one word answer to the unasked question is: demographics. The same answer applies to Switzerland, i.e. Switzerland for the Swiss. There are essentially no ethnic/minority populations in Switzerland so they have a very homogeneous population. With a little research, you can find out that removing just 4 major metropolitan areas’ data from the FBI crime data would move the US well down the international list of dangerous places.

I believe that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution is all we need!

When we render the LIEberal/Socialist/Marxist/Fascist/Communist Democrats (and RINOS!) powerless, we’ll REALLY MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

IIRC, Jorge Busho, FR’s sacred cow, started that particular mess. O’Bummer simply ran with it.

“Most people do not realize how large in size and unpopulated Maine is.”

I used to pull potatoes up to northern Maine. So far north the only radio station was one out of New Brunswick.
The first trip I was amazed at how few people there were in the interior of the state. At night I might see one car, daytime a few more.
If only it didn’t get so danged cold in the winter.
