Baltimore Needs Revival, Not More Federal Money
American Thinker.com ^ | August 5, 2019 | Trevor Thomas

One could consider the billions trillions of dollars in taxpayer funds already spent on places like Baltimore a form of reparations.  But it should be clear by now that more money from the government is not going to fix places like Baltimore.

Ever since Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic Party gave us the infamous promises of the "Great Society" — which was supposed to result in "the total elimination of poverty and racial injustice" — for decades, liberals across the U.S. have promised minorities, especially black Americans, that if they would only vote for Democrats, life would be better. Fifty-five years, dozens of welfare programs, and $20-plus trillion later, modern Democrats are still making the same empty promises. Even Charles Barkley sees the folly of this.

Lyndon Johnson's famous speech touting the Great Society was the commencement address at the University of Michigan in May of 1964. It was before a massive audience of about 90,000 people. The Michigan Quarterly Review published the text of the speech. The tagline at the top of the page boldly declared the purpose of the Great Society: "To Prevent an Ugly America."

Whether we're talking about Baltimore, Detroit, Seattle, the homeless-lined streets of Los Angeles, the poop-filled streets of San Francisco, or the violent streets of Antifa-plagued Portland, I think everyone in his right mind can agree on how "ugly" much of America still remains — especially urban America.

Free stuff isn’t working. Looks like it’s doing more harm than good.

“The worst enemy that the Negro have is this white man that runs around here drooling at the mouth professing to love Negros and calling himself a liberal, and it is following these white liberals that has perpetuated problems that Negros have. If the Negro wasn’t taken, tricked or deceived by the white liberal, then Negros would get together and solve our own problems. I only cite these things to show you that in America, the history of the white liberal has been nothing but a series of trickery designed to make Negros think that the white liberal was going to solve our problems. Our problems will never be solved by the white man.”

I am for doing good to the poor,
but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor,
is not making them easy in poverty,
but leading or driving them out of it.

I observed...
that the more public provisions were made for the poor,
the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer.
And, on the contrary, the less was done for them,
the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”

Benjamin Franklin

The Gods of the Copybook Headings

...As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

...And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Kipling

In order to fix places like Baltimore, we will need to take strong measures. Which, in some cases, involves the strength to do a lot less than we are currently doing.

Such strong measures will, of course, be criticized as “racism”.

Until “racism” ceases to be an operative term with weight in the political arena, no strong measures will be possible, and no fixes can be affected.

But I think President Trump is doing some very heavy lifting to help people see that “racism” is a ridiculous term and that it should no longer be an effective political insult.

You want to fix Baltimore? End welfare.

When women have no choice but to get a job, and marry men with jobs, only then will things get better.

Until every dollar already given to Baltimore is accounted for, not a penny more for that corrupt location.

$5 and a half billion from the federal government (us) to Baltimore in aid. That is why Baltimore is still a failure. The city officials keep Baltimore dysfunctional so that they can get this money, which they then use to reward their buddies, keep, and willingly accept as Reparations.

The politicians do not want this river of cash to stop. If Baltimore were to become viable, the money would stop.

So, as long as the fed and the state support Baltimore, the residents will remain poor and miserable.

The politicians keep Baltimorians poor and miserable SO THAT they can keep collecting the money.

AMERICA needs revival.

America needs to return to the rock upon which she began, and upon which she grew strong and prosperous.

That is not diversity, inclusion, tolerance, political correctness or safe zones.

It is our triune God, the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Golden Rule.

I’m generally not for creating new government programs. But, in Baltimore’s case maybe an exception would be in order. I’m thinking creating something akin to the Great Depression CCC Program should be considered. The population of Baltimore at its peak was about 1M during the 50’s. It’s now about half that at 0.5M. The decline is reflected in the massive number of empty houses, stores, factory’s. And, garbage is piled on the sidewalks and streets to the extent they’re impassable. Then, there’s chronic, systemic, multigenerational unemployment. Much of these unemployed don’t know how to work, have the self discipline, how to interact with coworkers in a collaborative manner. There’s plenty of work to be done in Baltimore. Why not use the unemployed labor pool to remove garbage and discarded junk and to tear down all these vacant structures and create new open spaces that could be used for new structures, parks, even agriculture? This is where a modern reincarnation of the CCC could be in order. Maybe use veterans, retired NCO’s, etc, to supervise? Anyway, just a thought...

Well, you do have to give that old devil, LBJ, credit that the “Great Society” was the most successful buy-the-vote-with-someone-else’s-money scheme ever devised. Approximately 95% of blacks vote for Dims.

Baltimore could also use a strong right to self-defense. It is no coincidence that the place with the most draconian gun control laws is also the murder capital of the country.

I like ideas like that, but I think it would have to be tied to ideas like “end welfare” in some form. Many people in the inner cities have no incentive to work. They don’t like the concept of a job. You propose a program where they will remove garbage and tear down vacant buildings. I say they won’t do it for a paycheck. But if such work is a requirement for public housing and EBT cards, then they might do it.
