FREEPER POLL: How to give at least most DC residents alternatives to "statehood."
Dangus vanity

Posted on 07/19/2019 8:27:41 AM PDT by dangus

The notion of D.C. statehood is just stupid. Sorry, 72 square miles and utter dependence of the federal government doesn't make for a state. Plus, most of "Washington" is no longer in D.C. anyway. So which alternative makes the most sense?

1. "Greater D.C." Expand D.C. to include Fairfax and Arlington Counties plus Alexandria, VA, plus Montgomery and Prince George's County, MD. D.C. thus becomes a tiny, but reasonably populous state containing the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, nearly all of the federal workforce, the CIA, Reagan Airport, the entire WMATA Metro Subway system and the Beltway. We add a blue state, but Virginia PROBABLY goes red, at least for a while. The population of Greater DC would be over 4 million.

2. "Core D.C." Most of the population and hotel space of Washington is ceded to Maryland. What remains is South of Mass Ave, East of Anacostia and West of Rock Creek, comprising the Navy Yards, Capitol Hill, the Mall, the White House, and Foggy Bottom, and a bunch of federal buildings in between. The remaining population would be about 150,000. This plan would be easier constitutionally.

Yep beyond the geographic absurdity, it’ll likely mean two new Rat Senators. No way!

It’s unconstitutional.

Or it was when we had a Constitution, before Usurpation Day, January 20, 2009.

It would be a mistake to think that DC statehood is about voting rights. It is about winning control of congress.

Statehood for Puerto Rico is the same thing.
With the added benefit of being Spanish speaking to further the plan to make US into North Mexico.

If they don’t like D.C. they can go back to where they came from, be it a State or some place else.

The founders never intended DC to be a state. I see no evidence they were wrong.

Return the land area back to the states who originally owned it.

#2, but first decentralize the Federal bureaucracy and make the Federal Enclave only enough to encompass Congress & the White House and any other vital sites that can’t be moved (Naval Yards?), then cede everything back to Maryland.

I have long believed the easiest and most fair way of dealing with this is to return most of the District to Maryland. Most of the land originally ceded by Virginia has already been returned. Grant them the three currently non-voting seats in the House and and tell these incessant whiners to kindly shut up.

1) Make it part of Maryland

2) Require Maryland residence to work in D.C.

3) Do what Trump is doing and start decentralizing agencies around the country. Besides Agriculture, move the Dept of Labor to Detroit, the Social Security Administration to Cleveland, the State Department to Lexington, KY. (where the people who will move there won’t be able to do so much damage), HHS to Dallas, etc. In any private business you would not spend high real estate costs for jobs that are clerical in nature.

And please don’t counter this with ‘Eliminate . . . , that’s not happening in our or our grand-kids lifetimes! Might as well just send the jobs to Red States instead!

Move their jobs away from the capital. Say Kansas City.

When no one is left, dig up the foundations and make a huge park out of it.

Return the land back to the States that donated it.
Then move the capital to DEATH VALLEY.
That's where those leaches belong.

Washington, DC’s area—72 square miles—is smaller than that of Bakersfield, Calif.

Have the US government buy the land of DC so everyone moves to Virginia and Maryland. People of DC can be, as they are now, temporary government employees, students and foreigners. The rest of the city is increasingly moving out. This is a problem that will solve itself in a few decades.

It’ll give them 2 more lib Senators and 1 more lib Rep. They don’t want alternatives. They want statehood to help tip the scale.
