In 1913, American Francis Ouimet won the U.S. Open golf championship. Prior to this, the sport was dominated by the Brits and generally played by members of the upper class. Francis Ouimet remained an amateur throughout his entire career. He had class, dignity, and was a tremendous ambassador for his sport. To a large extent, he touched off the boom for golf in America (with help, of course, from Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer and others). Rapinoe is performing just the opposite function for her sport. My interest in soccer - admittedly low to start with - is rapidly becoming dynamic apathy.
