After Democrats in the Legislature shut down his demand to send him a millionaires tax in the state budget, Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday the new spending plan falls short on the principle of tax fairness and said he wants to work with top lawmakers on something better.
Its Murphys first reaction after the Democratic-controlled Legislature quickly approved a $38.7 billion budget through key committees Monday that denies the governor his millionaires tax something hes wanted for years and pushed aggressively for since he unveiled his budget in January.
It leaves us without the stable and sustainable revenues to secure the investments we seek to make in our people and our state, Murphy said in a statement regarding the budget proposal the full Legislature plans to vote on Thursday.
It makes unnecessary cuts to valuable programs while increasing spending on non-vital ones and eliminates our first deposit in a decade into the states empty Rainy Day Fund, leaving New Jerseyans less prepared for an economic downtown, the governor said. So, at this point, as I have stated again and again, every option is on the table.

Fairness that doesn’t involve EVERY person paying something in taxes isn’t fairness.
But then taxation in general is unfair.
Greedy pols moaning about principles is comedy gold.
Still, it was “just” an income tax.
As Bernie, Warren, and others have noticed, the real payoff is continuous confiscation of wealth... A wealth tax.
If you want a really big meal kill and roast the golden goose. Hunger going forward, of course, but it looks good to many up front.
DemocRats cannot conceive of people reacting to their policies. ALL of their plans depend on static models. That’s why they believe socialism will work.
Christmas comes early, Ha ha ha ha ha, ha ha, ha, ha. Thanks SMGFan.
Only God knows what is fair.
Equality, though, everyone can see. A flat income tax with no deductions is equal.
How about a 10% tax on all advertising? Hit the enemedia!
It’s interesting that a NJ Donkey Governor is acting incautiously about taxes - it says out loud he doesn’t think Biden’s a winner; and so the Governor is playing the long game to ally with Pence’s rock-ribbed socialist opposition in 2024 (or perhaps try it himself).
Media does pay sales tax on advertising in some states and all media companies have to pro rata income by state and pay income tax to that state.
My proposal would be a new tax - like property tax.
All advertising - broadcast or printed, movie product placements, distributed flyers, mailings, etc. would be subject to this tax.
Hey, if it makes a difference in the life of one child it will all be worth it.
But most of the states that charge sales taxes already have you covered for the others.
As for income tax, the states are far ahead of you. All income is portioned by state for media companies. So for example, if 10% of a paper's subscriptions are in Virginia, that state gets 10% of the paper's revenue/expenses and pays income tax in that manner....same with broadcast companies. Kansas has 3% of a company's viewership, Kansas gets 3% of the company's revenue/expenses for purposes of state income tax. Trust me, nothing goes untaxed. You have nothing to worry about.
My point: I’m proposing a NEW tax - targeting the enemedia.
I get your points: these companies already pay sales and income taxes. Got it.
Again, A NEW TAX - targeting the enemedia.
No need for a reply. God Bless and have a great day!
