The deal is that Mexico does as Trump asks.

While raising import tariffs may give Mexico second thoughts about its immigration policies this policy would halt the invasion

In the hundreds of postings here in Free Republic rarely is this brought up. It’s Known As Reciprocity. We should be treating anybody illegally crossing the Mexican border into the US the way the Mexican’s do;

Any American illegally .crossing into Mexico. Before being kicked out can get a heavy fine and possible imprisonment.

It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegally exempting those who do so legally.

According to the Mexican constitution Americans legally in Mexico get a 2nd class treatment. Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. It’s time the US should consider making that reciprocal.

Prohibit and fully legally enforce punishment to violators offering any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges .In other words the incentives to those thinking of sneakimg into this country are removed and those that do better expect expulsion no job no voting no landowning ..

Politicians are predictable, because even if they’re insincere, they know what they have to do to keep their jobs. Don’t expect sincerity, expect rampant insincerity, and threaten their jobs. They’ll come around.

Yep. This is an action of foreign policy and diplomacy, totally within the Constitutional duties of the Executive Branch.

Sorry, Congresscritters. You gotta stay in your lane. When it comes to foreign policy (other than declaring war), the Chief Executive has authority. However, since you delegated a bunch of your authority to the President with the War Powers Act, he can do a lot of that too.

If it’s chaired by Pence, they already avoided sanctions with a few empty promises and maybe a few show events on their southern border. He has always been GOPe, pathway, free trader.

Too bad Trump won’t be there.

I hope the deal is they take all of their people back, and seal their border and stop Central Americans from coming here.

Anything else is garbage.

We should be negotiating with the Cartels using the US Air Force.

The true government of most of Mexico are the cartels - those are the people we should be negotiating with.

That's a thought. The cartels don't care about the caravans as much as they care about moving drugs and other illicit goods. Maybe a deal can be worked out there. Not good for us, in terms of drugs coming through. But the bigger danger are the illegals flooding in.

I hear ya. I’m not a big fan of Mitch at all. He does part of his job, and not as well as he should, and folks praise him as if he was stellar. He isn’t.

You know, we don’t seem to get anywhere. Mitch is a perfect example of why.

As I said, he does part of his job and not as well as he should. A lot goes undone.

Then otherwise decent Conservatives come by and praise him as if he was doing all that he could.

He’s not even close to doing all he could.

We had such a desperate need for legislation in Trump’s first two years, and they gave him ONE big bill. And that one is sunsetted.

Mitch is a good guy. He is giving the president the room to manuver.

It is not his job to bend to petty conservative whims. He leads the whole senate

Actually, human trafficking is more profitable than drugs at this point. The cartels have a vested interest in the border being uncontrolled.

Well heck then, lets not ask him to do anything Conservatives want. Just leave things where they are and let the Left move on from here when Trump is gone.

I was operating under the assumption we wanted to defund Planned Parenthood, PBS, and NPR.

I was operating under the assumption we wanted to reign in the deficit spending.

I was under the assumption we all agreed our border should be closed to illegals.

No wonder nothing gets done. We’re asking too much.

Politics is the art of the possible.

Senate time is too valuable to be wasted on spinning wheels to generate noise and smoke

Mitch is not the only gop senator on the wrong side. Both senators from Texas are opposed to these tariffs. And even if they believe that Trump is making a mistake, they should shut up at least while Trump is trying to get help from Mexico. Almost as if some evil force was twisting their arms to wave a surrender flag before the fight begins.

I remember just after the 2016 election Maddow was saying we never had to worry about POTUS doing the bidding of a foreign power before. Maddow got it wrong, it's not Trump.

But senators do have time to wave surrender flags while Trump is about to negotiate with Mexico.

Yeah, so we get nothing done at all.

We deserve to lose if this is what we get when we win.

They beg us to put them in the majority, and then make every excuse known to man when it comes time to put the pedal to the metal.

The sad thing is, folks who should know better actually try to defend them for doing nothing.
