Residents near New York City are bracing for the impact of a possible tornado that could bring strong winds and possible flash floods to the area.
The National Weather service issued tornado warnings for several counties surrounding Manhattan on Tuesday evening, urging residents in the path of the "dangerous storm" to stay inside.
The service said the storms could produce hail the size of quarters.
"Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely," NWS said in a statement. "This Tornado Warning replaces the Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for the same area."

There was a Tornado Warning. It was cancelled. Then another Tornado Warning. then it cancelled. Busy night. Glad it calmed down in NJ/NYC.
There is one on Staten Island near the Goethels Bridge.
Tornado watches are issued hours in advance. They could be upgraded for radar rotation but they use warnings for radar rotation or weak tornadoes. If a strong tornado is confirmed they issue a tornado emergency. Frankly tornado warnings are used too frequently.
Just out of curiosity: Where is the trailer park in Manhattan?
Wherever Du-blasio is shacking up.
The buildings in Manhattan would introduce too much turbulence disrupting the organization of the tornado.
“... tornado warnings...surrounding Manhattan...Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed...”
They look for hook formations on Doppler radar. The hook can turn into a real tornado in very little time. I say better to be safe.
Watches are for potential tornadoes. Warnings are for real ones.
Emergencies are a new construct.
And I was a spotter for my country in the 1980s and its why I went for my Amateur Radio license.
Oh no... tornado warning..must be Trump’s fault...
It’s a good thing we have weather station KWO35 up and running to keep us alert here in the New York city area. - Oh wait..
If there were one in Manhattan, it'd be a vertical one. One trailer on top o' the other. Trailer parks are probably in Brooklyn or Queens.
On the news now they're talking about "violent" weather in Pennsylvania.
Whoever wrote this has no idea about severe storms or editing.
Everything is different here on the east coast. They issue tornado warning for radar storm rotation. That means a rotating storm, not a tornado although it can be a precursor. Only a small percentage of tornado warnings here are for actual tornadoes. I don’t know the percentage but I’d guess about 10%.

In the midwest, what Ive said is how its handled.
The other FReeper said they issue Emergencies for actual tornadoes, but NOAA weather radios have no setting for such a beast. Emergencies = Warnings
LOL. Lots of "mobile homes" surrounding Manhattan?
It’s AOC’s fault!
