The Stop & Shop parking lot at the South Bay Center in Dorchester was packed for a change on Thursday Vice President Joe Biden as he slammed the grocery stores parent company for proposing health care coverage cuts and other changes in its contract.
How can they make that money, buy back all that stock and tell you theyre gonna cut your wages? Biden told hundreds of union workers, shoppers and politicians surrounding him on the rainy Thursday afternoon. How in Gods name does that match anything?"

Stop & Shop says it proposes paying at least 92 percent of health premiums for family coverage and 88 percent for individuals. The company currently covers 94.3 percent of premiums for families and 91.4 percent for individuals.

Biden showed up more than an hour after the rally began, following speeches from employees, union leaders, U.S. Sen. Ed Markey and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. He compared the South Bay Center to his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and recalled his father working cleaning furnaces and selling cars.
My dad left Scranton because he didnt have work, he said.
He described the middle class as not a demographic, but a value set that was built up by unions. He credited unions for taking employers to courts and securing 40-hour work weeks, overtime pay and other labor rights.
For a while, a lot of other laborers, non-union, forgot it," Biden said, but now the way theyre being treated by corporate America, theyre beginning to remember it again. Thats why theyre going to support a boycott of this place.

Biden plays the angry white man real well.
Why yes,Joe was a union coal miner!
Or was that his father?
Maybe some guy in England?
I’m surprised guys working in a convenience store even get healthcare benefits.
The Company reduced the amount they are paying for health care for its employees due to skyrocketing healthcare costs caused by ObamaCare. In other words Biden and his gang are responsible for the cuts.
Man, only covering 92%! That means...let me think...I have to pay 8% of my insurance! If I were you, I'd quit my job and work for someone who pays 100%. Problem is, you can't find one who needs a re-stocker, or a butcher, or cashier who even comes close to that. But you listen to Joe, vote Democrat, and dig your hole deeper so Joe keeps you right where he wants you...you idiot.
Hmmm...wonder if Unions had anything to do with that?
That is SO nice of Beto!!
I hope he doesn’t make guacamole dip for the meetings...
The way his arms flail about he could make a gallon of guacamole a minute!
Big f****** deal, eh joe?
Howie Carr,a great Boston talk host and columnist, refers to Markey as "Mister Frostee".
New England has better supermarkets - Shop-Rite, Price Chopper, Big Y, Hannaford, IGA. Stop & Shop is not as great as the others. Price Chopper is great, so is Big Y...and I forgot Acme and Shaw’s...
It doesn’t matter - Stop and Shop will be out of Business in a year or less. They are already getting crushed by non-union stores - Wal Mart, Aldi, Costco, Big Y, etc. Wegmans will move in and finish them off.
And the verdict is in! Wegmans is the greatest supermarket chain in history! (Full disclosure: I live in Rochester) lol
Agreed. S&S is getting hurt by non-union stores, even before the strike their stores were always slow compared to the competition across the street. When S&S is willing to loose their Easter/Passover sales in 3 states, that ether says the Union demand are outrageous OR they are going to make changes soon.
Don’t forget Aldi’s - got a spiral sliced ham there for $0.95 per pound, and Trader Joe’s.
No need for S&S anymore.
Just out of curiosity, I've been wondering what their union dues come to. Anyone know?
I remember back in July 1995 when the Detroit newspaper strike began. It involved over 2,500 union members and lasted until February 1997. Other than pure ignorance, I still can't understand how they could justify losing almost two years of wages.
It got nasty, picketers at the Sterling Heights plant on 16 Mile and Mound would occasionally throw "stars" (kinda like jacks) onto the highway causing drivers traveling by to get flat tires.....
