WASHINGTON (Sep. 15) -- William Weld, bowing to the inevitable, withdrew his name today as President Bill Clinton's nominee to be U.S. ambassador to Mexico.
Weld announced his decision at the White House, recounting how he spent his summer vacation trying to get a hearing out of Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jesse Helms. Weld described Washington as "a funny town" that he's had enough of "for the next little while." (288K wav sound)
The former Massachusetts governor said he decided that whether or not his fight was winnable, it "would have been at some cost to the effective working of the Senate."

And Jesse Helms killed his nomination. It was beautiful!!
The Swamp has been here for a very long time.
Snarl’n Arlen and Lugar.
No real surprise they would team up with Kennedy and Clinton.
Jesse Helms’s finest hour.
Add to that, watching him wipe the smirk off that mealy-mouthed RINO Tricky Dick Lugar’s face, who was content to rubber-stamp this Derp State Hillarybot RINO, was similarly magnificent.
We need more heroes like Helms in the Senate again.
Helms could be prickly, but would make a deal if approached right. Weld almost seemed to relish fighting with Jesse, though. That never accomplished anything.
