PARIS, April 15 (Reuters) - Notre-Dame Cathedral went up in flames on Monday in a roaring blaze that devasted the Parisian landmark, one of France's most visited places.

Flames burst through the roof of the centuries-old cathedral and quickly engulfed the spire, which collapsed.

A huge plume of smoke wafted across the city and ash fell over a large area.

Firefighters cleared the area around the cathedral, which marks the very center of Paris.

President Emmanuel Macron canceled an address to the nation that he had been due to give later on Monday evening. A presidential official said Macron was to go to the scene of the blaze.

"A terrible fire is under way at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris," Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Twitter.

France 2 television reported that police were treating the incident as an accident.

According to this report, the roof and atleast one of the spires have now collapsed:

With the rash of church burnings that have recently occurred in France, it is easy to point the finger at the “usual suspects.” (i.e, the Muslim community, especially recent immigrants). And, frankly, I think it more than likely that is where the culprit, if there is one, comes from.

But, if this is the case, the backlash is going to be tremendous and the French, while cultured and tolerant, can reveal a particularly thorough vindictive streak when provoked beyond endurance. Deliberately setting fire to Notre Dame would be such a provocation.

So, I hope that a prompt but thorough investigation is conducted to consider and eliminate other possible causes (renovation-related, non-Muslim church/religion hater, “mentally ill,” etc.) before the government and people turn on the immigrant community.

And while we wait, let’s see what kind of responses come in from various organizations (Muslim and otherwise) around France and the world.

Yeah but even so, this fire seems too aggressive and right before Easter? Hmmmm. Plus I looked up the weather in Paris and they've had rain. So we got wet, moist wood going up like a bomb? Unless someone left a blow torch going by accident, I'm saying this was set deliberate, probably started with gasoline at the spire to bring it down. If it is a terror attack, I guess this means John Kerry will get James Taylor to sing them another song because that certainly prevents terror attacks.

I have been wondering for weeks just what their problems and complaints were.

Never found out what they wanted, until now.

They want to DESTROY, SMASH, BREAK everything they can, because they are evil people.

The Reign of Terror encore.

Good find. That article says it all.

If France is having a spate of Catholic churches being vandalized and set on fire, just over the past few months,
then this fire doesn’t sound like an accident, either.

So sad...

Tears my heart out. This is one of the most magnificent churches in the world. I was so lucky that I actually got to
see it, almost 20 years ago. We stood taking pictures and gazing in awe at the beauty of it, inside and out. I’m so SO sad that this is happening.

Agree with that which you posted...

As to the framing of the church the main body of the walls is stone upon stone with the roof and some other elements structurally (flying buttresses) to support the walls made of wood

I have been there personally and it is not like anything you may have seen in construction elsewhere. The restoration was to remove some artifacts in preparation for the work. For the whole building to go up as it is I say the chance of a careless worker is in question as it would be quite a mistake to be using anything with flames in preparation.

It was magnificent, Catholic or not and I remember standing near a wall and placing my hand upon it on the inside, it was as if I could feel the energy of the millions of souls who had sought refuge there

I am deeply sorrowed that this has happened, the message is clear....

And for the shills and others who need to know I am not Catholic

Anyone who goes to a Catholic Mass - or any service - in France understands that there are many faithful and good people in that beautiful country.

The 8th Air Force and Bomber Command of the RAF destroyed many of the German cathedrals and a number of French cathedrals as well. They have been rebuilt. Notre Dame was not touched by WWII, and now it appears that a renovation project will destroy it.

The cathedral of Chartres burned in 1194. The difference is that the people of that time had the faith, the will, and the skills to rebuild. Notre Dame de Paris will never be as it was. This world is passing away.

April 15, 1452...Is it in the “Bible Code”? Today is the birthday of Leonardo Da Vinci. What does this mean? What could it signify?, etc.
