DETROIT -- With political divide at an all-time high and misinformation impacting politics daily, former President Bill and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared in Detroit Friday night to deliver a message focused around voters reclaiming the political process while respecting one another.
We need to treat people as people instead of looking for opportunities to bash them, Bill Clinton said to a round of applause early in the 75-minute show.
Hillary Clinton echoed those statements several times but admitted part of the problem with politics today is the spread of misinformation and how it plagued the 2016 elections. She hopes candidates in the upcoming election all have the time needed to explain their platforms and plans so that voters can make decisions based on fact.
Something she says was missing during her presidential campaign.
Part of that is for voters, the people to take elections back, Hillary Clinton said. Really demand that candidates tell them what theyre going to do.
Bill said the a real frustration for himself and voters is the ability to determine fact versus fiction in the news. Still, the Clintons say they read newspapers daily and maintain a healthy appetite for news and world events.
The Clintons took the stage shortly after 8 p.m. at the Fox Theatre as part of their An Evening with Bill and Hillary Clinton tour. The event was moderated by actor Ben Stiller who is a close friend of the Clintons.
The Clintons also spoke about the importance of listening to ideas that dont just align with your own and being willing to hear opinions from all sides while remaining civil. Hillary said she learned a long time ago that criticism can be a good thing, but baseless attacks have become far too common in todays political landscape.
"Sometimes the people who are criticizing you can be actually very helpful," Hillary said.
Along with civility, the Clintons touched on how their grandchildren have shaped their views on life, the recent arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, troubles in the Middle East and the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.
Stiller opened with some light-hearted banter with the political icons by asking what TV shows theyre the binging right now. Hillary didnt name anything specifically but admits she does binge watch TV. Bill on the other hand singled out The Blacklist and Madame Secretary as current favorites.
For the most part, Stiller attempted to lighten the mood although he admitted at the start that hed never moderated a discussion like this before. He also said he was hoping to play the role of the audience and ask questions theyd like to know the answers to. He managed to slip in a one-liner about Hillary renaming her book to What the hell Happened?
Was being president fun? Stiller asked.
Bill said it was a fun experience for a handful of reasons. He said as a music and movie fan, the biggest musicians would come perform for him as president and the biggest directors would always want to screen their movies at The White House.
However, he also said it was fun because no matter how stressful the job got, he was always in a position to make someone elses life better each day.
The crowd was overwhelmingly receptive to the messages delivered by the Clintons, however there plenty of seats to be had in the lower level of the theatre. Entire rows were nearly empty along with many seats in the first 15 to 20 rows on the theater.
The duo has been on the road making stops across the country and in Canada since the fall.
“We came, we saw, he died.”
Madame Civility’s greatest moment.
Trying to keep Hillhag in the news until her dirt diggers can knock out all the plausible candidates.
Then she will get into the race.
You can’t make this s..t up :)
Civility.
NOW they want civility. Now they will crawl out of the woodwork wanting decency and civility and soon we will be hearing about “no witch hunts”.
Because now they are the witches soon to be hunted.
It’s “deplorable” !
The Algonquin Round Table is returned.
Yep, Bill can no longer create a fictional reality , have it pushed by a willing media, and have his base willingly sucking up his lies. Very frustrating losing such power.
I wouldn’t even waste my time if the cost of the show was free.
She’s done; no big donors will back her. They lost a ton of money on her last time, and considering she had the media covering both flanks the whole time, it was completely her own fault.
It was no accident that Gore, Kerry, McCain, and Romney never saw the top of a national ticket again.
Romney is stupid enough to believe he might have another shot at it.
I didn’t know they were doing a comical farce.
The Clintons are merely a shadow of the darlings of the Left that they once were.
The left sure got took didn’t they.
Clinton Abrams 2020 I said it here first, you watch
Biden/Obama.
Good point...and in the Clintons’ case they sold so many Fastpasses to foreign entities they are already on the s*** list.
Here’s the odd thing: she refuses to spend any of her own dirty money on her own campaign despite the fact that Trump did just that (minus the dirty part) and beat her. She is such a grasping, greedy chancer that the thought of speculating to accumulate (in office) never occurs to her.
I was going to go see them but decided on giving myself a much needed root canal........
A man would turn that upset into a victory, but a woman becomes a sad trombone for life.
