Democratic primary voters are looking for a wide range of disparate things in their partys 2020 standard-bearer. For some, the top priority is to nominate a progressive who boasts a long record of supporting single-payer health care, standing up to the financial industry, and championing organized labor.
And many just want a nominee who will definitely beat Trump.
Unfortunately, there is no Democratic 2020 hopeful who checks all of these boxes at once. But there could be.
What if there were a Democratic politician who had been championing single-payer health care for two decades, and calling for a ban on stock buybacks and for giving workers representation on corporate boards before it was cool? What if she also helped lead the congressional opposition to the Iraq War in 2002, while earning a 100 percent pro-worker rating from the the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and 100 percent pro-choice rating from NARAL?
Just for the sake of argument, what if this politician were also the first openly gay woman ever elected to Congress, the first LGBT person of any gender elected to the Senate and had won reelection last year, in the single most important 2020 swing-state, by a double-digit margin, despite facing a barrage of Koch-funded attack ads, and refusing to compromise on her exceptionally left-wing policy commitments? Wouldnt such a politician be a uniquely compelling 2020 candidate?
Which is to say: Wouldnt Tammy Baldwin be a uniquely compelling 2020 candidate?
And Tammy Baldwin has been winning elections in Wisconsin for a quarter-century now. As insinuated above, she won reelection last year by nearly 11 percentage points, despite being a top target of the GOP donor class.

She might be able to beat Trump - if she can stand out in a very crowded field.
Well, now we know that Eric Levitz is GAY! All they think about is PERVERTED SEX!
Does that mean Hillary is no longer the smartest person in the Milky Way?
First gay president? Hardly.
After reading this oped. I am wondering why the writer is ‘wondering why’ Tammy Baldwin is not at the top of the list of candidates for the WH in 2002.
Tammy is definitely not where the general electorate is regarding policie.
The Democrats obsession with identity politics has been their tar baby.
Look how well its worked for them in Virginia.
James Buchanan was probably gay. That didn’t work out so well.
Whoops, I meant to write why isn’t Tammy in the field for 2020.
Tammy Who? Seriously?
And shes extremely special and better than the other Rat Tard candidates because she a Lezzie?
Hey, sign her up!!! The more freaks the merrier.
IMO it’s tough to run against an incumbent in a hot economy. I think a lot of this is posturing to get names out there for 2024. I look for a throwaway candidate like Biden. Someone who can afford to lose and not be hurt in 2024.
It’ll be Gavin Newsome.
Because she checks all the Rat boxes - is a woman, is gay, is progressive and she comes from a swing state.
Like I said, theres a Democrat presidential derby underway and its hard to see right now wholl come out on top.
Really? He might run?
He definitely could be on anyone’s short list for VP. Although, based on some traditional running mate criteria, such as helping carry a home state, he wouldn’t help there. Whoever the Democrats nominate in 2020 will carry California by millions of votes.
I’d be so happy if they’d run their “most qualified” candidate again, but they’re not that stupid. The MQ couldn’t beat a noob senator or a guy with no political experience whatsoever, and she’ll be 4 years older next time.
It could be someone we still don’t see coming.
I’ve said for a while that once trump is out - be it in 2021 or 2025 - this country is done. So she would be a fitting “leader” of the final act.
Is a woman, shes gay, is progressive.....
Hey we already have one of those, Spartacus Jazz Hands Booker. LMAO
If we don’t get a handle on election fraud, it doesn’t matter who they run.
Trump will be re-elected if the economy is strong.
People are expecting it and the Democrats are really rehearsing for their turn in 2024 when they expect to win.
Thank goodness she isn’t running. Her open gayness, as well as being a life long politician..would be unbeatable.
