Why Biden, Bernie and Beto Shouldn’t Get Cocky

Polls and predictions this far ahead of November 2020 aren’t worth much.

Promise me something: Over the coming weeks, whenever you hear a pundit or read a poll on the subject of who the 2020 Democratic nominee might be, you’ll flash back four years. You’ll remember predictions about the Republican nominee at this same point before the 2016 election.

Republicans then were in a situation similar to the one that Democrats are in now. More than a dozen candidates were poised to run. And in December 2014, CNN/ORC published the results of a survey that sought to determine which of them had the most support and the best chance.

The answer was not Donald Trump.

“Jeb Bush is the clear Republican presidential front-runner, surging to the front of the potential G.O.P. pack,” read the story on CNN’s website.

Surging. Jeb!

He had the support of 23 percent of respondents. That put him fully 10 points ahead of his nearest competitor, who was … Chris Christie. Next came Ben Carson, followed by Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee.

Need I remind anyone how that fearsome five fared?

We political junkies got far ahead of ourselves then, and we’re getting ahead of ourselves now. Almost 23 months before the 2020 election, we’re handicapping contenders, edging toward prophecies and setting ourselves up to look every bit as foolish as we deserve to. We don’t learn. That would get in the way of a guessing game that we relish too much.

It's obvious that a lot can happen in 2 years.

Unless you actually are Biden or Bernie or Beto, though, are you really going to worry much about one or the other dropping out or getting the prize?

It's not just too early to know who will win. It's way to early to care or waste much time on the whole thing.

"Republicans then were in a situation similar to the one that Democrats are in now."

Related indirectly; During the 2016 primary there was a picture of shrillary, smiling smugly, seated in an easy chair, overlooking an inserted graphic of the dozen or so gop candidates lined up at an early debate.

I have searched for this graphic with no success.

I do know President Trump's victory must have wiped that smug look off her cadaverous mug.

I believe that Hickenlooper, governor of Colorado, is being groomed for a run. A safe white guy, probably to be paired with a VP candidate who is a minority female.

I doubt a nationally unknown funny-named White guy who supported fracking will have much luck in the rat primaries, his support would mostly be confined to newspaper editorials.

I think Kamela Harris gets the nominee. California moved its primary to after Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire. So the nightmare of California picking nominees begin. So far republicans haven’t changed the date, but will they in 2024?

It's not just too early to know who will win. It's way to early to care or waste much time on the whole thing.

The Iowa Caucus is a little over 13 months away. The first Democratic debate is probably only 8-9 months away.

Is it just my faulty memory or was there a time when we got three years with no talk about who the opposition candidate would be? We have 23 months left of speculating who the Democratic candidate will be? Won’t everybody be sick of them by the time the election arrives? This is WAY over political!

This is like saying it’s 372 days until Christmas 2019.
