Trump Nominates New Attorney General

President Trump has nominated a "brilliant man" to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general, the president said outside the White House Friday. He has tapped William Barr, former attorney general for the late President George H. W. Bush, for the position.

Trump said he "did not know" Barr until recently, but found him to be respected by lawmakers from both partIes. He predicted the process will go "very quickly."

However, Democrats have hinted that they will make the nomination process a nightmare for Barr, considering his past criticisms about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. He has also reportedly suggested that Hillary Clinton's role in the Uranium One scandal was more worthy of investigation than Russian collusion.

The Mueller probe has been an Achilles heel for the office of attorney general the past couple of years. When Jeff Sessions felt pressured to recuse himself from the investigation because Democrats didn't like an answer he gave during a congressional hearing, Trump never let him forget it, calling him "weak" and "beleaguered."

I just heard Trump say Barr has always been his first choice.

I don’t think it works that way, and if it does, why hasn’t he?

He won’t make it through confirmation before he tells them to just go to hell. Very few will from this point out.

Are you kidding me? You seriously forget all of the post here lauding Sessions when his name was floated?

I still prefer Sessions to this guy. Whatever Sessions' shortcomings, he was the strongest opponent of illegal immigration that we've had in the AG's office in decades. Barr, as a Bush administration retread, won't lift a finger on the issue, and may very well push for amnesty and a liberal immigration policy.

You’re getting attacked, but you actually care. You want Trump to have someone that supports him and his agenda, not another Wray or Sessions.

You mean like the idiots who thought that Sessions, an immigration hawk and pro-gun AG, ought to be replaced by pro-amnesty, anti-gun Rudy Giuliani? About the only good thing that can be said about Barr is that he isn't Rudy, since Rudy is well to the Left even of Bush Sr and much of his team.

Nope. He is the Presiding Officer, and is authorized to call a Recess:

When the next D is elected Pres I want the Republicans to deny him any person he nominates.

I'm afraid that's wishful. How often have the pubbies said that a president deserves their nominations and their roll is only to advise and to consent (no emphasis on consent). What were the final votes in the senate for RB Ginsberg or Sotameyer. Two of the worst SC justices ever.

I admit it has never been done. But I just re-read the appropriate sections of the Senate Rules, and there are no restrictions on the VP doing this.

In fact, there is one section that says the Presiding Officer can Adjourn or Recess. This was done in 1994 in the middle of a Quorum Call by the Presiding Officer. Remember, the VP is the Presiding Officer of the U. S. Senate.

From Wiki:

2016 election and Trump administration

Barr believed that then Republican candidate Donald J. Trump’s calls for investigating Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate for President, were not inappropriate. He told The New York Times that “there is nothing inherently wrong about a president calling for an investigation. Although an investigation shouldn’t be launched just because a president wants it, the ultimate question is whether the matter warrants investigation.”

In the same Times piece, Barr added that an investigation into the Uranium One controversy was more warranted than looking into whether Trump conspired with Russia: “To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility.”[24] Elsewhere, Barr has commented that “I don’t think all this stuff about throwing [Hillary Clinton] in jail or jumping to the conclusion that she should be prosecuted is appropriate. But I do think that there are things that should be investigated that haven’t been investigated.”[25]

I like that.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I do too. I’ll give him a ‘shot’ at the job .... at this point, it would be difficult to do less than Sessions. Just getting Rosenstein out of the “acting” role would be an improvement.

"Barr has made some strong comments about Mueller’s investigation going off the rails, and also that the Clinton Foundation and Uranium One need to be investigated by the Justice Department. I like that."

_____________

He has said those things.

But do you think a guy like him, with a background like his, intertwined deeply with drug running to central America with all the old names ........ can be trusted to do anything about the present list of criminals? I don't

“On the other hand he was confirmed first time around in two days and Joe Biden spoke positively of him.”.....

Sounds like another Rosenstein, Sessions, McMaster, etc., Swamp creature disaster nomination.............

Just when Trump needs a strong conservative legal mind to keep Mueller and the commiecrats from attacking him viciously in the House, he nominates another Republicrat flunky to do what? Throw his friends under the bus?

.....so sad, the opportunity to wrest control of our country from the globalist conspiracy is over. MAGA is now dead.
