President Trump has nominated a "brilliant man" to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general, the president said outside the White House Friday. He has tapped William Barr, former attorney general for the late President George H. W. Bush, for the position.
BREAKING; “I think he will serve with great distinction.” President Trump announces William Barr as new attorney general pic.twitter.com/mKzYDZgNj9— TODAY (@TODAYshow) December 7, 2018
Trump said he "did not know" Barr until recently, but found him to be respected by lawmakers from both partIes. He predicted the process will go "very quickly."
However, Democrats have hinted that they will make the nomination process a nightmare for Barr, considering his past criticisms about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. He has also reportedly suggested that Hillary Clinton's role in the Uranium One scandal was more worthy of investigation than Russian collusion.
The Mueller probe has been an Achilles heel for the office of attorney general the past couple of years. When Jeff Sessions felt pressured to recuse himself from the investigation because Democrats didn't like an answer he gave during a congressional hearing, Trump never let him forget it, calling him "weak" and "beleaguered."
based on the comments above, FR has become a total cesspool of ignorance, full of ignorant knee-jerk comments from ignorant people ... i don’t think anyone attacking this guy has a sound basis for their attacks, you know, things like analyzing past performance as AG, past comments, etc. ... all they know is that this guy was AG for a Bush, so therefore regardless of anything else he must automatically be bad ...
Gutless fairweather keyboard warrior!
The GOPe is counting on us abandoning POTUS when it gets tough and returning to our support to our favorite pet beltway GOP career politician. Not going to happen here but I can already see it among the weak kneed GOP plantation “conservatives”. They are just dying to tell us Trump is a Democrat and [fill in the blank] GOP Senator is the true conservative leader.
“Moving goalposts doesnt work on me.”
Oh for crying out loud, are you SERIOUSLY trying to pull that 3rd rate discussion trick.
So let’s get off your retarded attempt at a tangent and get back onto topic
“Nobody was screaming for him. Period”
That is a baldface LIE. Hell, here is an old thread where people were championing him for VP or future president:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3393748/posts
But dont you worry, NO ONE WANTED HIM FOR AG.
“You will not find a single person who had Sessions on their AG wishlist before Trump floated the possibility.”
“All pro-Sessions sentiment was pro-Trump sentiment only.”
OH so NOW whose the one “moving goalposts”?
“Duuuuuur no one liked him.......if you see anyone that does, uh.....that was just them being pro Trump only....yeah that’s it!!!”
Give it up, dude. Seems like you are more covering your ass for supporting him in the past, and want to have an out.
I’m not arguing about the moved goalposts.
Show me one person who qualifies as “base” and floated Sessions’ name for AG before Trump did - which was the claim made (”The base was screaming for Sessions.”).
He made it out to look like Sessions had base support for AG independent of Trump’s support for him, and that simply is not even slightly true - to assert it is to mislead.
Not one of those posts even mention the AG position.
You are a flat-out liar. You don’t belong here.
RE: all they know is that this guy was AG for a Bush, so therefore regardless of anything else he must automatically be bad ...
Yes, just like Ted Cruz was Trump’s opponent in the 2016 primaries, therefore his proposal for funding the Wall is grandstanding.
> all they know is that this guy was AG for a Bush
And got started with the CIA. AND was a former supervisor to none other than Robert Mueller.
Objections are not unreasonable at all.
The job is to root out the Deep State. This is what Trump was elected to do.
His first AG refused to take on the task and stalled out justice for 2 years. Now the second nominee has an orthodox Deep State background.
This nominee doesn’t even have the appearance of someone who would take on the job of ridding us of the Deep State. This has the appearance of a complete sell-out.
Time to review his high school yearbooks, dating partners, partying habits, type of car he drives, color socks he wears, if he has goldfish, if the starts brushing his teeth from left to right or right to left and how many times he chews before swallowing.
>Not one of those posts even mention the AG position.
“Hell, here is an old thread where people were championing him for VP or future president:”
Because you obviously cant read.
But keep on with your little backpedal fantasy of the AG nominee everyone really hated from the start, and no one ever even remotely said his name.

All of that and then some.
> fantasy of the AG nominee everyone really hated from the start
Another lie. Who the hell are you? I’ve been here 20 years and never seen your name before, and you show up on this thread and lie viciously in support of a creepy Deep State nominee.
Admin, can you clean up this mess please. This guy is obviously here just to troll and manipulate.
Democrats too? Well that scares me.
“This nominee doesnt even have the appearance of someone who would take on the job of ridding us of the Deep State. This has the appearance of a complete sell-out.”
So why dont you give us a name, Mr. “You dont belong here”? Hopefully it isnt some name you only know because they appeared on TV shows a whole bunch.
A lot of us arent looking for “appearances” this time because the last guy supposedly had that and didn’t do anything with it. So we are going to give this man a try, and see if some experience can get the job done.
“Another lie. Who the hell are you? Ive been here 20 years and never seen your name before,”
I’ve been here since 2005, so you are either blind or dont realize that FR doesnt consist of you and 6 other people.
“Admin, can you clean up this mess please. This guy is obviously here just to troll and manipulate.”
Oh please. The Admins arent here to censor people for your fee fees.
I’m going to give this guy a chance to prove himself, whether that makes people like you mad or not. “He’s deep state” is annoyingly becoming shorthand for dismissing anyone that has had a job in DC at any point in the past 55 years, and is not an argument to dismiss a person just because you’d rather have someone else.
VP Pence is the President of the Senate. So, he comes into the Senate, takes the gavel and announces a recess. No vote required. Done.
Remember:
Barr was one of the leaders of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
As U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia his office prosecuted state and local officials, members of the Medellin drug cartel, and got a perjury indictment on then-sitting Republican Congressman Pat Swindall.
Barr was president of the Southeastern Legal Foundation,[2] an Atlanta-based law firm and policy center that litigates in support of "limited government, individual economic freedom, and the free enterprise system"
In 2002, he was described by Bill Shipp in an OnlineAthens.com article as "the idol of the gun-toting, abortion-fighting, IRS-hating hard right wing of American politics". During his tenure, Barr was regarded as one of the most conservative members of Congress.
Barr is a staunch proponent of gun rights, and is opposed to any and all efforts to restrict the ownership of guns.
Barr advocates the repeal of the 16th Amendment, which gives the U.S. Congress the power to levy an income tax without apportionment. As an alternative, he proposes a form of consumption tax, such as the FairTax
Barr sat on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association from 2001 to 2007.
I think in the long run he may make a good AG.
No, he only presides over joint sessions of congress concerning results of electoral college votes and may only vote on ties in the Senate.
that is a false statement. The President of the US is not a KING, almost everything needs to go through congress or the damn courts
