A midterm election season that appeared quite settled Tuesday night has suddenly entered a bitterly contested overtime, with Arizona’s Senate candidates locked in a tight race and trading the lead as votes trickle in – and Florida reprising its 2000 role as the center of a ballot-counting brawl complete with armies of lawyers and allegations of local corruption.

In Arizona, Democratic candidate Kyrsten Sinema suddenly took a narrow 9,600-vote lead over GOP opponent Martha McSally late Thursday, with some 400,000 votes left to count in a closely watched race that will determine the size and influence of the Republican Senate majority in January.

That was after McSally had consistently led Sinema since Election Day, and was ahead by 17,000 votes as of early Thursday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A court in South Florida has been asked to intervene in the tight U.S. Senate race between Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott as the two sides prepare for a possible recount. A hearing was set for 3 p.m. in state court.

Scott filed lawsuit against Broward County Supervisors of Election Brenda Snipes Thursday night, asking the court to order Snipes to turn over several records detailing the counting and collection of ballots. Scott's thin lead over Nelson has narrowed in the vote-counting in the days since he declared victory on Tuesday night.

Without citing any evidence of wrongdoing, Scott also asked Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate elections offices in the Democratic strongholds of Palm Beach and Broward counties, questioning whether they have been taking too long in some sort of effort to inflate the Democratic vote.

It will take a Constitutional Amendment, but it will be worth it.

"No state shall set any other date but the 2nd Tuesday in November on even years between presidential election years for their general election.

The 2nd Tuesday in November shall be a Federal Holiday.

The certified results of every state general election shall be reported to the Federal Election Commission no later than midnight of the Wednesday following the 2nd Tuesday in November."

24 hours. If you can't schedule absentee and provisional and overseas ballot for final reporting commensurate with true Election Day voting, tough. shit.

I would focus group this wording and also another wording where the Amendment would be expanded to ban runoffs, recounts, off-year elections, and 'jungle' elections.

If the focus group response was encouraging, then this Amendment's success would be a litmus for a Constitutional Convention, where I would put the entirety of Congress and the Senate on the same 4-year schedule as the President. Then wave elections would actually move the needle. All mid-terms do is gridlock legislation and tie the President's hand.
