Watching the Dodgers/Red Sox final innings. It is amazing how a manager takes out a pitcher who is loose & dominating through almost 7 innings, Rich Hill of Dodgers, and brings in nervous reliever(s) who get shellacked. 4 run lead gone. Managers do it all the time, big mistake!
While that may be true, it reminds me of the time I got to ask a Cy Young award winning pitcher about his World Series win.
I was curious to know if the pitcher felt he just wasn't "on" that night ( as we all do sometimes, whatever our endeavor) if he would, out of respect for his teammates and the fans, ask the manager to pull him out of the game.
The pitcher seemed sincerely surprised that I would even ask such a question, telling me that he nor any other picture would be major league material if they ever felt that way.
He said "I go into every game figuring I'm going to stroke out the next 10 batters I face. "
I guess that's what separates elite athletes from the rest of us.
Picture=pitcher
Guess I need a proofreader.
They limit pitchers to 100 pitches so they can recover for the next game in the rotation. He would have had until spring training to recover.
One of the best tweets he has ever made, except most won’t get it.
They were in the seventh inning and Hill had averaged about 5.2 innings per start for the regular season, so he'd already gone longer than normal. You're up 4 to 0, you're trying to tie the Series, your starter had walked the opening batter, so you go to your relief staff and try to close it for him. It works more often than not.
The common and shared experience nostalgia is powerful juju. The moon landing and 9/11 are the only real, substantive ones.
I’m hoping for a return to conservative American values for my kids and I hope to see the left defeated and languishing in demise.

“I go into every game figuring I’m going to stroke out the next 10 batters I face. “
== = = = = = = = =
Exactly AND the batter facing him says ‘I am going 5 for 5 today and hit 4 home runs’.
I would tell my grandsons after a (predictable once in a while) bad game.
NO one has ever batted a thousand, struck out 3 every inning or thrown 32 perfect games in a season. You get to the 350 mark by averaging a hit 3.5 out of 10 times at bat, the other 6.5 will be ‘unsuccesful’ at bats - for the most part.
Other ‘corn’ I ‘bored’ them with was
Get up to bat and think SINGLES, the rest will take care of itself.....hit around 300, run smartly, hit to opposite field - go up with the intention of moving the runner OVER one base, learn to bunt AND play more than one position - keep your mind on the ball at all times - and you will play at any and every level...but baseball isn’t a 9-5 game, takes a lot of work in the other hours..
((I used to play thinking a pitch or two ahead, what will I do if ball hit in certain situations...Kept mind focused-— later in life that turned into ‘defensive driving’, I still keep track of the happenings around me, trying to plot out an ‘escape route’ if needed.))
Good comment! No reason whatsoever to question a guy offering his opinion about baseball strategy. Every American has a right to be an arm-chair baseball manager. It’s as AMERICAN as the game itself.
I thought at the time it was a mistake, Dodgers bullpen is dicey. Hill is 38 but doesnt throw 100mph, 120 pitch count is not too much to ask in a World Series game. But if Hill had blown the lead everyone would be screaming. Trump is awesome, he picks up on end results, he expects people to get it done. Old school pitchers would have at least tried.....
If you love baseball like I do and go to various chatting sites, we all argue our points of view. Trump is no different as he loves the game. Point he was making years ago starting pitchers went all the way. Today teams with too much analytics make moves and take away the manager’s eye/gut test. Yahoo news tried to make this a fight Trump vs LA Manager D. Roberts. He pointed out that several managers pull starting pitchers way to early.
Shellacked. Snowflakes get the vapors in 5...4...3...
It seemed obvious the manager should start the bullpen and used the starters only if needed.
Alas, game 5 was worse. The starter got 1 out, gave up 3 runs and just missed getting the loss.
Trump is older, so likes the old days when pitchers just stayed in.
He had thrown 82 pitches, and was into his 3rd time through the lineup. He felt himself losing it and told the manager.
With analytics and ‘match-ups’ all the rage these days, that’s how the game is played. Old-timers don’t have to worry about $200 million payrolls.
His next book in 2025: The Art of the Sh*t Post. Instant bestseller.
Art of the Sh*tpost
Great title. lol
Didn’t Roberts pull Hill early in last year’s World Series, too?
There’s a report out there that Roberts is considering an ‘opener’ for tonight’s game.
(An ‘opener’ is a relief pitcher who starts the game but is only expected to face a few batters, who is then pulled for a regular starting pitcher).
Look for an epic Twitter and casual-fan meltdown if that actually happens!
Babe Ruth once pitched a 14 inning complete game. Now these managers pull a guy who is almost pitching a perfect game after 6 innings. Hill is not a fastball pitcher so he was in no danger of getting hurt. He was pulled because his manager is an idiot.
Replace "Hill" with Sessions.
