"I read one report that Hill was getting tired and told the manager."

While that may be true, it reminds me of the time I got to ask a Cy Young award winning pitcher about his World Series win.

I was curious to know if the pitcher felt he just wasn't "on" that night ( as we all do sometimes, whatever our endeavor) if he would, out of respect for his teammates and the fans, ask the manager to pull him out of the game.

The pitcher seemed sincerely surprised that I would even ask such a question, telling me that he nor any other picture would be major league material if they ever felt that way.

He said "I go into every game figuring I'm going to stroke out the next 10 batters I face. "

I guess that's what separates elite athletes from the rest of us.

“I go into every game figuring I’m going to stroke out the next 10 batters I face. “
== = = = = = = = =
Exactly AND the batter facing him says ‘I am going 5 for 5 today and hit 4 home runs’.

I would tell my grandsons after a (predictable once in a while) bad game.

NO one has ever batted a thousand, struck out 3 every inning or thrown 32 perfect games in a season. You get to the 350 mark by averaging a hit 3.5 out of 10 times at bat, the other 6.5 will be ‘unsuccesful’ at bats - for the most part.

Other ‘corn’ I ‘bored’ them with was

Get up to bat and think SINGLES, the rest will take care of itself.....hit around 300, run smartly, hit to opposite field - go up with the intention of moving the runner OVER one base, learn to bunt AND play more than one position - keep your mind on the ball at all times - and you will play at any and every level...but baseball isn’t a 9-5 game, takes a lot of work in the other hours..

((I used to play thinking a pitch or two ahead, what will I do if ball hit in certain situations...Kept mind focused-— later in life that turned into ‘defensive driving’, I still keep track of the happenings around me, trying to plot out an ‘escape route’ if needed.))
