My comment was intended as humor. But people who go from one side directly to the polar opposite are not by nature centrists. They are more likely to flip back to the other side again, or take some other extreme ideology than become a moderate. I’m not talking here about people who gradually move from one thing when they are young to something else as they get older, usually leftist to conservative. I’m talking about people like Scarborough who changed abruptly relatively late in life.

He was originally one of the freshman Congressmen who ran on Newt Gingrich’s Contract With America in 1994, and was there as a Republican for six years. After he left he complained about how corrupt the leadership was, and eventually became a leftie talk show host.
