China backs out of trade talks as U.S. imposes new tariffs: ‘This is like the 1930s’
Great Power War ^ | 9/22/18 | USA Features

While the Chinese make good on a pledge to refuse negotiations while under threat, President Trump is making good on his campaign pledge to improve trade conditions for the United States with countries he believes have long taken advantage of the American market, the largest in the world.

It’s hard to fault the president. China’s trade imbalances with the U.S. have been massive — in the hundreds of billions — for years. Now, much of that is due to the fact that U.S. manufacturing capacity had fallen off over the past few decades (not altogether caused by, but accelerated after, the passage of NAFTA in the early 1990s). But also the imbalance is also due, in large part, to China’s epic protectionism; that is, government policies that aim to promote Chinese industries and products over imports.

But there is more to the Trump tariffs — taxes on imports — than meets the eye.

National sales tax, basically. It’s not like these goods are going to now be manufactured in the US. At a 10-25% tariff rate, it’s till far cheaper to make them in China, it’s just that now the government gets sales tax revenue out of it.

Tariffs are a tax hike. China is not paying the tax. You are. At least understand that much, people.

In the 1930s, the US loaned China billions of dollars, to fight Japan. That loan is still on the books.

Encouraged by policies that discourage the building of factories in the US. If China is a better place for your industry than California (and it probably is...) then something is seriously wrong.

Something that never seemed to be fixable until now. At least in any state except California...

I don’t agree.

For the last generation and a half, some people have been getting very rich, selling out America, to China.

Finally. After everyone in both parties have been selling out the USA, we finally, have a leader who is supporting America.

It has been far too long, since that happened.

No problem. The US dollar is stronger. The Yuan is weaker. So a 10% tariff will be unnoticed. Don’t listen to the tariff crap. Tariffs are taxes on their stuff. If they can’t sell it to us, they simply lower their Yuan. Then it sells here. Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Korea can make most of the things China makes.

If our government gets its money from our income then we are taxing our goods through the workforce. If we have tariffs then we are taxing their goods. Our debt goes down.

The reality is that we have a stupid amount of cheap goods from China that we don’t need. Its so cheap that we buy more. And we just throw away the old stuff. If we can oar metal in Australia, ship it to China, Make steel from it there. Create a lamp. Ship it to the US stuff it on a train then a truck, then to a store. And you buy it for $19.99 its too cheap. And you will still buy it if its $21.99.

What gives China the right to have a trade advantage over the US? They already have a labor cost advantage. The tariffs should be even higher.

So is the argument that we enrich an enemy by allowing them to steal our trade and tech secrets and keep our products out of their markets while they subsidize their industries to gain a competitive advantage so they can build their military to confront the US , all so we do not have to pay $1.25 for the Walmart can opener rather than a dollar?

Yes, but manufacturers who want to sell their goods cheap will move out of China to another country (even if it’s not back to the US).

This is just as much about containing China as it is about fixing the trade deficit. The point is the US needed to start using trade rules as a weapon to deal with other countries, especially those who seek to challenge us. But the free trade ideologues wanted us to have unilateral disarmament. Which is as stupid as the peaceniks who wanted unilateral nuclear weapon disarmament.

Thats crap. If its just a tax hike on us. Explain then why does every other country do it to us and scream when we put tariffs on their stuff. Why is China mad when we raise tariffs on their goods. Its because its tariffs get paid by the country producing the goods. In China their Yuan goes down. So they get less. Our government makes money and does not raise our income tax. A tariff is a tax on their workers. Income tax is a tax on our workers. Remember currencies go up and down. And tariffs get swallowed up in the currency changes.
