Gee at that rate before you know it there will be more empty seats then occupied. You will be able to know when the stadium starts placing covers over the unsold seats. Normally the trick is to sell the covers as ‘ads’.
“NFL is still tops in ratings among tv offerings.”
Our ratings suck but we still edged out ahead of Storage Wars.
Negro Football League
Oh darn it, I missed opening night of the season? I scheduled to watch paint drying yesterday. This weekend, I’m going to the Boat Show in Tampa...
US Tennis Open has lost its sheen for me too.
can’t watch Serena without wondering why she bought into the Kaepernick story.
ESPN running John McCain funeral stuff in the news crawls; gushing comments on Bill Clinton being in attendance; and
Alex Baldwin being interviewed today are some examples as to why it was almost impossible to stick with the tennis this year.
So, I sort of knew the season opener was coming up this week, but didn't know/care which day and/or teams were involved. As I was browsing through the channel listings last night, I noticed the game was on, so I switched over right as the 3rd period was kicking off. What happened next is what the NFL should really be worried about:
Don't know what happened on k/o; wasn't really paying attention. I had the sound muted, but was aware they immediately cut to commercial. I had my phone, so I started browsing the 'net (maybe even FR). Game came back, they ran a few plays (running I think), penalty flag was thrown. By this time, with all of maybe 5 minutes total invested on my part, I switched the game off and went to look at something else.
I wasn't protesting, I wasn't angry/mad. Rather, I simply didn't give a sh!t one way or the other. That means the entertainment **product** itself sucked ie it failed to capture my attention, so it lost me. This is what really counts for the NFL: that there is something terribly wrong with the very production of the entertainment vehicle.
They could possibly turn around Kap, et al over a period of seasons (maybe), but if they don't address the NFL's game (not other versions like college or HS which continue to be exciting), there's no way of predicting how far they could fall.
I agree they have shared some same problems over many years, but also think we can look at the NFL's 2016 and 2017 audience losses as unique events related to unique factors that have not yet spilled over into other sports (though Lebron James might well drag it into the NBA this year).
I know many people (including myself) who used to watch the opening game avidly. Not anymore. You want to use your job as a forum to protest the fact that you and your scumbag friends keep getting caught and prosecuted for your crimes? Don’t cry when you take your lame employer, who is afraid to fire you, down with you. Please, NFL players, keep exercising your right to be complete idiots in front of the world.
The Nike commercial didn’t help either.
Sports and other forms of entertainment are enjoyable diversions. People don’t want these events to be contaminated with extraneous issues and become platforms for promoting pet causes or expressing political views.
If you go into a business and the cashier starts lecturing you about something or trying to convince you to accept their personal views chances are you won’t go back there again. The paying customer is a valuable ‘asset’ to be treated with respect. Don’t piss them off. Simple concept to grasp. Except for some athletes and performers.
When the revenues start shrinking they will have a change of heart. Its always about the money in the end.
There is another situation I'm about to add to my list. Now watching ESPN's College Football Game Day. A segment on college athletes who committed suicide and how difficult it is for the parents has been running for about fifteen minutes. ESPN seems to load Game Day up with more and more such stories each year. There is a limit to how much time fans want to spend watching downer stories before college football games they plan to watch.
Not to diminish these real life tragedies, but it's definitely a question of how many such emotional stories are too many for this type of game day show.
Very fair. And I make no judgements of your feelings and thank you for your service. I cant tell anyone how to feel Nd your points are very valid.
Thank you for the reply, and I totally understand that you were simply saying how some veterans feel about the protests — not how I should feel. You were just stating an observable fact.
My personal view reflects the long history of military service in my and my wife’s families. It represents a lot of collective sacrifice and no doubt colors my views about the antics going on in the NFL.
Just my humble opinion.
Regards.
It won’t be if it keeps shrinking instead of growing.
My third year not watching, but I care that they fail.
