A lengthy weather delay and a lackluster first half did not help matters as the NFL ratings slump continued for at least one night into 2018.
The Falcons-Eagles NFL Kickoff Game earned a 13.4 overnight rating on NBC, down 8% from Chiefs-Patriots last year (14.6), down 19% from Panthers-Broncos in 2016 (16.5) and the lowest for the season opener in ten years.
The 2008 Giants-Washington Kickoff Game, which moved up to 7 PM ET to accommodate the late John McCains acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, had a 10.1. Not counting the 2002 game on ESPN, overnights for which were unavailable, this years 13.4 overnight is the fifth-lowest in the history of the game (16 telecasts).
The Eagles win peaked a 14.8 from 9:30-9:45 PM ET, during the first quarter. The game began 45 minutes later than scheduled due to inclement weather. The last time the Kickoff Game was pushed back due to weather was 2013, when Ravens-Broncos delivered a 16.2.
Philadelphia led all markets with a 32.9 rating, followed by New Orleans at a 24.6. Atlanta was third with a 19.8. Denver (17.5) and Milwaukee (17.3) rounded out the top five.

This is one of their smaller drops in recent years, but it’s still an additional drop from ratings that had already dropped.
I wonder how low they will have to drop before the NFL decides to address the problem.
These ratings declines can cost big bucks.
I don’t know details of the contracts. But I understand if a certain minimal rating is not achieved, there are provisions for the NFL to have to pay back some of the fees paid for broadcast rights.
Bottom line is that if this keeps up, it will hit the NFL owners in the wallet. .
Didnt watch a second of it. Didnt care.
I will never watch an NFL game or any other professional sport again. The commies have wrecked everything.
The line from the NFL is that overall tv viewership is down, and the NFL is still tops in ratings among tv offerings.
Don’t know. Doesn’t matter to me, the Browns have been dead for so long that the NFL is nothing more than a curiosity to me.
There really was an NFL game last night??? Gee.
-—They had the Super Bowl team and still down 8%, I’m optimistic this weekend won’t be any better.——
Well, every yearly opener has the Super Bowl team. That’s kinda how they do it.
like Yogi says, if nobody wants to watch the game you can’t stop ‘em.
Just wait for the Sunday Night ratings. IIRC it’s the first time in years that the Cowboys won’t be on the opening Sunday night game.
Yeah, NFL has to give back free advertising time if they don’t meet minimums. I’ve read, some of the big advertisers have yet to buy time - if NFL tanks again this year, these advertisers will move their dollars to College Football games.
I believe even College Football ratings are down as well.
Yawn. I still say the NFL isn’t going anywhere. There are approximately 130M regular followers of the NFL; those that actively seek the content. That’s an almost unfathomable number and no other business/sport/hobby/entity can really make the same claim.
I’m optimistic this weekend won’t be any better.

The NFL has turned off a lot of people, and a lot of people have turned the NFL off.
There really was an NFL game last night??? Gee.

Yes, the Nike Football League played a game somewhere on some station at some time. Don’t know and don’t care who the teams were.
The NFL has reneged upon that agreement.
There will be consequences.
I watched a couple of DVR'd episodes of Battle Bots.
We still have one American patriotic sport left (NASCAR), and the NHL hasn't gone off the deep end yet either.
