Sex abuse scandals continue plaguing Catholic Church
The Washington Post via NOLA.com ^ | August 12th, 2018 | By The Washington Post

With revelation after revelation, a new wave of sexual abuse scandals is rocking the Roman Catholic Church and presenting Pope Francis with the greatest crisis of his papacy.

In Chile, prosecutors have raided church offices, seized documents and accused leaders of a coverup. In Australia, top church figures are facing detention and trials. And in the United States, after the resignation of a cardinal, questions are swirling about a hierarchy that looked the other way and protected him for years.

The church has had more than three decades - since notable abuse cases first became public - to safeguard victims, and itself, against such system failures. And, in the past five years, many Catholics have looked to Francis as a figure who could modernize the church and help it regain its credibility.

But Francis' track record in handling abuse is mixed, something some outsiders attribute to his learning curve or shortcomings and others chalk up to resistance from a notoriously change-averse institution.

Analysts who have studied the church's response to sexual abuse, and several people who have advised the pope, say the Vatican has been unable to take the dramatic steps that can help an organization get out from under scandals - and avoid their repetition.

"Each new report of clerical abuse at any level creates doubt in the minds of many that we are effectively addressing this catastrophe in the Church," Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the archbishop of Boston, warned last month. Failure to take action, O'Malley said, "will threaten and endanger the already weakened moral authority of the Church."

Not just the Pope, but every Catholic has a role to play here.

Do not report criminal priests to the parish Bishop.

Report him to the County Sheriff. In 100% of all cases.

That's been the problem all along. Thinking "The Church" would fix it.

They won't. You must.

My dad, long ago, and Hank's dad beat Father Hayes to a bloody pulp one Saturday afternoon at St. Stanislaus because he was a little too friendly with alter boys.

But you can't do that anymore.

Can you?

Sex scandal. We all know what they meant is that it is code word for “fag priests raping BOYS”.

You are correct. Abuse is a crime and should be reported immediately to the legal authorities. Sadly there are still some Catholics who refuse to believe that abuser priests exist. They are the old school and dying off, and maybe fortunately so. Meanwhile, it is clear that no one should trust a church hierarchy who demonstrably betrays the will of God.

You can if you don’t tell the parish Bishop OR the County Sheriff ;)

After being plied with Sauterne, the good father decided he wanted to rub our butts. Even at 11 or 12 we knew we didn’t want any part of that and ran to our bikes...rode home fast.

We both agreed to tell our parents.

Thus the good Father got his ass kicked. Severely.

And another priest watched it happen, as did Hank and I.

“Report him to the County Sheriff. In 100% of all cases.”

This is explicitly required - i.e. reporting cases to the civil authorities - in many if not all dioceses already.

But unfortunately, he was just transferred to another parish about a week later.

If he’s still alive he’s probably still molesting Alter Boys. Hell, he might be a Bishop.

OMG! I’ve dealt with creeps in my life. I can’t even imagine had he gotten to you. Makes me want to rage as I am a “Momma Bear”. Wouldn’t be able to urinate properly if I’d gotten ahold of him!!!!

Homosexuality is and always has been an abomination. It should never be tolerated anywhere. Historically any culture that celebrated it, was inherently decadent and declined, withered and passed into the dust of history. America and the West will be no exception.

There are 400,000 Catholic priests worldwide; of course some are predators - genuinely bad people. There is no church scandal in such imperfection. The only risk to the Church is if they respond poorly when priests abuse the power they are granted. The only solution is to respond openly and firmly to such transgressions. Don’t hide the offenses, just remove the predators from ever (i.e., lifetime) dealing with children again. First offense and it’s over. No exceptions. I’d also like to see procedural changes to reduce access, similar to what Scouting used to do (back before the gay mafia took over).

My first FR tagline:

Disgusting, and sad. I will get blowback for this, but it is way, way past time to let married men be priests. One of the most insightful and charismatic priests I've ever known had been married, had two sons, and was a high school teacher. His wife was tragically killed in an automobile accident, and after his sons went off to college he went to seminary. Incredible man.

“There is no church scandal in such imperfection.”

The scandal is in the fact they have been covering it up instead of putting them in prison!

Of course, out of 400k priests there going to be a boatload of perverts. Some may have joined because they were perverts...even converted perverts by another priest.

But the cover up, that’s not scandal. That’s a crime against humanity.

“but it is way, way past time to let married men be priests”

Fine.

But that does not eliminate the homosexual pedophiles. And there’s more of those than most Catholics want to admit.

The church needs a massive reformation. Step one, allow married men, ones who are married to women, to be ordained.

gee.... just maybe all the homosexuals that infiltrated the church with the communists are the problem.

we need a Martin Luther to nail a proclamation on the door of the Vatican and hold the Pope and all the Pink Mafia, thieves and grifters in the Catholic hierarchy responsible for the desecration of the church, the predators allowed to harm the children and the money stolen and squandered on apartments, luxury and male prostitutes.

Other than that... all is well in the RCC
