Officer who shot Aurora homeowner involved in deadly shooting in June ( near Denver: update )

The Aurora police officer who shot and killed an armed homeowner early Monday morning was involved in another deadly shooting in late June.

The officer was returned to regular duty while the investigation of whether he was legally justified in using deadly force in the June incident was still ongoing.

...

In this week’s incident, police received multiple 911 calls just before 1:30 a.m. Monday reporting a disturbance. Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz, in a written release, said officers encountered “a very chaotic and violent scene,” heard gunfire inside a home at 10609 E. Montview Blvd. and then “encountered an armed adult male.”

An officer opened fire, hitting and killing the man, who has been identified as Richard "Gary" Black, a 73-year old Army veteran who served in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

When police entered Black's home, they discovered a “deceased adult male intruder” inside.

According to the attorney representing Black’s family, the man never should have been shot by a police officer. He says an intruder broke into the Montview Boulevard home and grabbed Black’s 11-year-old grandson, who was sleeping on a couch, and dragged him to a bathroom, where he attacked him. Black and the boy’s father tried to pull the attacker off the child, but after a struggle Black grabbed his gun and shot and killed the man.

Moments later, the Aurora officer shot and killed Black.

Among those who called 911 was Jeanette Black, and she gave dispatchers a very specific description of her husband and what he was wearing. The family's attorney says evidence suggests that while Black was inside his home the officer who shot him was outside, although he said he wants to see body camera footage so he can better understand exactly what happened.

"...shot the homeowner..."

The police officer will be exonerated without so much as a blemish on his record.
He will very happily retire at 50 y.o. and collect a terrific pension for 30+ years.

Don’t know about the previous incident yet, but this latest is so bad. That cop killed a good guy.

More information needed. Could be a “trigger happy” cop or one with overpowering fear reflex. If either of those is true, he has the wrong temperament and shouldn’t be a cop.

The police chief did not keep the cop at a desk job from the June deadly force, ongoing, not resolved incident.

Mistake ?

"Hope that the body cameras do not get lost, destroyed, or wiped - like with a cloth."

Indeed.

The attorney hired by the Black family will hopefully get a preservation of evidence order from a judge (don't know how much wiggle room they have in Colomexico?) so there are consequences for destruction of evidence in the case.

I don't believe in coincidences. This officer may be ill-suited for the job he has with tragic results.

Mistake ?

YES ! And not only STUPID BUT INCOMPETENT AS WELL...

This BS. This trigger happy POS should not be an LEO- PERIOD!!! And neither should this "chief" IDIOT...

Lets put this into perspective using Layman terms. Everthing that happened inside the house is already done and over with. The Homeowner has saved His Grandson and the rest of the Family Members in the house.

Joe or Jane Public are out for a late night walk and are walking along the street/sidewalk and hear the final few seconds or maybe a minute or so of the commotion in the house AND He/She is armed (CCW/CHL whatever they call it in Colorado OR not) and now being in line with the front door of the house see it is open and there is a Man (or in the shadows since we don't know if the lights are on or not) or an outline of a Human in a white robe who is armed (again we don't know of the lighting conditions) and without saying/asking "DROP THE GUN!" OR "CAN I HELP" fire at the Person and KILL the Person.

Now jeeze I wonder what the resulting charges would be ?

PS: Does anyone know if the Killer cop had any type of Tactical Light on his pistol or was using a Flashlight or if there was Night Vision Equipment involved ? OR WAIT does he have SUPERCOP VISION AND JUST HAS TO POINT AND SHOOT!?!?

There are too many cops who should have never been hired for the job. The departments are taking two years of college over everything including knowledge and common sense. Two years in college shouldn’t be automatically seen as a positive thing.
