Trump pardons Oregon ranchers at center of 40-day standoff

President Trump on Tuesday pardoned a pair of Oregon ranchers whose arson conviction became a focus for opponents of federal government land ownership.

Dwight Hammond, 76, and his son Steven, 49, were convicted in 2012 and sent to prison on arson charges. They had set a series of fires on their ranch that spread to federal land.

The Hammonds’ case became the inspiration for the 40-day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. The organizers wanted to protest federal land ownership.

The Hammonds distanced themselves from the occupiers and didn't endorse the action.

In a statement Tuesday announcing the pardon, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emphasized uncertainties in the case and the prison terms and fines the Hammonds had already completed.

“The evidence at trial regarding the Hammonds’ responsibility for the fire was conflicting, and the jury acquitted them on most of the charges,” the White House said.

“The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West. Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency.”

Psst Pssst what is that sound? It is the sound of Liberal heads exploding and it doesn’t even make much noise because they are just full of hot air.

The Hammonds were political prisoners. LaVoy Finicum was murdered by the FBI in a hit job that resembled a mob attack. I remember when people across this great nation of ours were afraid they might be next to be arrested and jailed simply for supporting the Hammond’s, the Bundy’s and LaVoy Finicum. I was amazed when the threads on Free Republic about the murder of LaVoy wouldn’t even get 100 comments. I know people were afraid to even comment. We came so close to losing all of our liberty.

I thank God for President Trump!!

I never realized until recently that Washington was a badass field marshal on the battlefield before becoming president.

(something I should have known years ago!)

But George Washington will always be our greatest President.

We were warned. At Independence Hall a lady asked Franklin if we had a republic or a monarchy. Franklin replied, “A republic if you can keep it.”

I would consider the person who literally saved America from it's enemies hundreds of years later to be at least equal in greatness. The founders knew attempts to undermine and destroy America would eventually follow. And it came scary close to fruition.

This is a fantastic thing.

Trump's aim is true.

I had read the backstory on this, I don't have it all at my fingertips, but their was a very vindictive aspect to the continued prosecution of these men, based on a dislike of their child-rearing philosophy and their Mormon religion.

Essentially they were hounded by a woman in a position of authority (US Attorney?) who had previously run Oregon Child Protective Services and lost a fight with them over a child.

I was left with the sense that this was a case of the Lesbian-Progressive cabal in Oregon taking revenge on the hated Dirt People. (Some call them the GloboHomos)

There seems to be some confusion as to if this was a full pardon. The confusion is generated because “commutations” and “full pardons” are issued as “Presidential Executive Grant of Clemency” which is the term used when it is either a pardon of act of clemency for time served or other commutation.

This was a full pardon. See statement from White House:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/statement-press-secretary-regarding-executive-clemency-dwight-steven-hammond/

See copy of Arapio’s which shows the form that is used:

That burn violation was nothing more than a pretext for the BLM to confiscate the Bundy property for Dirty Harry Reids developer friends. Have a look at the tax maps and tell me there isn't anything to that.

Not to be a killjoy, but I think what I see when I look at a map is different than what you are suggesting. Here's what I see:

The Hammond's ranch is near Burns, Oregon.
The Bundy's ranch is near Las Vegas, Nevada.
There is about 688 Miles of distance between Las Vegas and Burns, OR.

So if Dingey Harry was trying to get the land of the Bundy's (near Las Vegas) putting guys in jail for a fire that took place 700 miles (near Burns, OR) away doesn't really help him in any way that I can see.

I believe the actual connection is that both families are remnants of the earliest settlers in the harsh great-basin, northern desert region of the Western USA, and are both old school Mormon families that had similar sorts of problems with the BLM.

Regardless though, whether I'm right or just missing something, it's a great day for Lady Liberty!

MAGA, thank you VSGPDJT !

But George Washington will always be our greatest President.

I look at it that way too. However, I look at General Washington as being in a class of of his own as a president. The circumstances required for a president to have the opportunity to equal or surpass him would have to be unthinkably dire.

All that said; this pardon is a wonderful thing. DJT is amazing! :)
