'I am a woman and I am fast': Olympic runner fighting testosterone rule in court

Caster Semenya, the world and Olympic 800 meters champion, is fighting "unfair" regulations that hinder certain female athletes. The International Association of Athletics Federations brought in controversial new rules in April that mean some women with high natural testosterone levels could be excluded from middle-distance races. Semenya, a two-time Olympic and three-time world champion, is the highest-profile athlete expected to be impacted by the rules that divide medical opinion. The South African's lawyers, Norton Rose Fulbright, which has offices in London, issued a statement on Monday saying the athlete would "file the legal challenge to ensure, safeguard and protect the rights of all women on the basis the regulations are irrational, unjustifiable, and in violation of the IAAF Constitution (based in Monaco), the Olympic Charter, the laws of Monaco, the laws of jurisdiction in which international competitions are held, and of universally recognized human rights.

It looks to me like a karyotype would confirm the presence of Y chromosomes.

So Caster was born a female, ended up with too much testosterone, and was into women? Wow, that is actually an interesting conundrum for gender in sports. She wasn’t just “identifying” as a female, she really is one. I don’t know the answer for this. She should be able to compete, but what does this mean?

Will hormone levels determine which gender you compete with? Very strange.

But that really is a conundrum. What do we do? There won’t be many, of course, but you have to make the rules favorable to people who can’t help it while keeping men out of women’s competitions. Can you be “male” on the basic of hormones alone, if they are natural?

There are rumors that Caster is a hermaphrodite (female genitalia plus descended testes). The new PC term for that is “intersex”. If so, that might explain Caster’s hyperandrogenism.

“It looks to me like a karyotype would confirm the presence of Y chromosomes.”

One must be allowed to compete based on chromosomes period. XX or XY is just the way it is. If one is female and blessed with extra testosterone levels she has a superior advantage but is just lucky and must be allowed to compete. Actually that blessing of extra testosterone in a female is a bit of curse. If that extra testosterone level is the result of a syringe it is just simply doping and must be disqualified.

In the parlance of Hillary Clinton, this matter has already been litigated.

Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite. She has internal testes and no uterus. When this was discovered and it was a big story several years ago (perhaps 2008), her community expressed outrage and cried, “Racism!” Her mother said something like, “Well, sure, she never had a period, but we just thought she would start menstruating later.” Now, come on! Even in the most remote, rural parts of the world, women worry when a girl doesn’t begin to menstruate by a certain age.
