McConnell's Embarrassment: Democrats, Not Republicans, Passed Omnibus Bill

"All you need to know why this was a bad bill is to look at the roll call," a long-time Republican lobbyist emailed me Saturday, referring to the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending law.

Of course, he's right.

President Donald Trump reluctantly signed the $1.3 trillion spending bill Friday, but a careful review of the crucial Senate vote shows it was Democratic members, not Republicans, that actually passed the bill.

In another major embarrassment to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, his own Republican caucus opposed the very bill he negotiated.

The omnibus bill passed the Senate by a vote of 65 to 32 (with three abstentions).

Of the 65 "for" votes, 39 Democratic senators supported the bill with only 25 Republicans signing on. Republicans control the Senate with 51 seats.

Of the 32 "against" votes, 23 were Republicans, including stalwart conservatives such as Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Rand Paul of Kentucky,Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Mike Lee of Utah.

Democrats were so excited about the bill's passage, they could not contain their glee.

"We Democrats feel very good because so many of our priorities for the middle class were included," beamed Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York.

Schumer was especially happy because chief among his priorities was the funding for a $30 billion the infrastructure project in New York known as the Gateway program.

Well, this makes it sort of bipartisan, I guess.

The Freedom Caucus is not at all happy.

Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer, nothing much of anything will ever make either of them happy.

Short of impeaching Donald J. Trump and his removal from office.

25 Repubs thought it wasn't worth it to shut the government and that this could go on and on and not a damn thing would come out of it.

The vote is a good thing...one of those half empty, half full things.

No surprise. Pubbies do what Pubbies do best — lose. They have been pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory for decades. To them, leadership is giving the Dems most of what the Dems want so they can show how nice they are.

How many times have we heard the Pubbies say they want to reach across the aisle? How many times have the Dems ever said that?

Recall the former fiascoes when the Pubbies had both chambers? Frist/Lott and Hastert.

IIRC, one of McConnell’s reelection pitches was: give us the majority and we will show we can lead. [That makes one want to laugh and cry.]

2,000+ pages.

This thing didn’t just grow up overnight. Ryan/Pelosi/McConnell/Schumer have had their people working on it for a long time.

Ironic that, when when the Dems were in control, they wouldn’t even let the Pubbies into the committee rooms where bills were being written.

Schumer gets $30 billion for a tunnel that benefits very few and very few even know about and Trump gets $1.6 billion of $25 billion he needed for wall that benefits an entire nation.

Winning.

I STILL have no answer to the question I’ve asked every conservative I know:

“What was the Republican leadership in Congress hoping to achieve by putting forth a bill that was more popular with Democrats than Republicans?”

I just don’t understand why they crafted a bill that passed with a couple Democrat votes to spare, rather than a couple Republican votes to spare, unless they are so full of hatred for Trump, they consider losing control of the House a small price to pay.

Well, Trump has gotten Ryan (Romney) and McConnell (Bush) out into the open, but it escapes me what’s next.

The GOP + the Democrats in Congress mean to destroy him, and unless he’s prepared for kinetic action, I think they will.

The list of Senators voting No and Not Voting is in the article. I suggest you thank or slap your senators accordingly.

Which is exactly why the President should have vetoed the bill. Even though we all know what really happened there is virtually no way we are going to hold the house in November. No matter what we do a certain percentage of our voters are going to stay home. 2nd amendment supporters alone may be enough to hand the majority to the dems. I hope I’m wrong and I fully support our president but I’m aftaid this was a fatal mistake.
