If there's one thing our drop tests have taught us it's that phones with glass backs do not hold up well when dropped on concrete sidewalks. We didn't expect that to change with Samsung's new Galaxy S9. It uses the same Gorilla Glass 5 material as the previous Galaxy S8, and the Galaxy Note 8 both on the front and back of the phone, and it has the same curved edges on either side.
The back of the Galaxy S8 broke on the first fall from hip height in our previous drop test, but the screen remained intact despite dropping it from 5 feet onto a gravel road. Going into our test, I didn't expect the Samsung Galaxy S9 to have the same good fortune as its predecessor considering it's about 8 grams heavier and 0.5 mm thicker. Plus there's no way that curved screen could come out unscathed from another round of drops. Right?!

Anybody that doesn't have some sort of case on their cellphone has to be nuts.
I accidentally dropped my Samsung tablet and the screen held up just fine.
The LCD display behind the screen was damaged, however. Cost me $300 to replace. Still cheaper than buying a new tablet.
I carry it in a bag now, with handles.
Screens are tough - they have to withstand finger pressure from tapping, swiping, pinching, opening up and scrolling.
Yeah, I didn’t even use my Amazon Fire Tablet until I got a case for it.
I hate cases. But I did put a pop socket on it.
I casually looked at a new phone and the S9 looked real sharp. Then I saw the price. No phone is worth close to $1000. The new IPhones go for over $1000. The carriers now FINANCE them!
Dropped my S9+ screen down this afternoon from the top of the washing machine... not a scratch.
“I casually looked at a new phone and the S9 looked real sharp. Then I saw the price. No phone is worth close to $1000.”
Got my s7 for less than $500 and after two years can get $360 trade in on new s9 which retails for $720 (Not $1000).

$679 at costco.
That IS the reason. It doesn't cost much, just a few dollars, but I have never had a phone crack. And I drop it lots of times. Because I'm clumsy.
