Q: On recent trips to Las Vegas traveling on Interstate 15, Riverside resident Janet Field said she noticed that the rest stops along the interstate were closed in both directions. She wondered why the rest stops are not being used, and said they appear to be in good condition.
A: Water and electrical problems are to blame for the closures of rest stops on 1-15 between Riverside and Las Vegas, said Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga. The rest stops outside of Barstow and Baker are just old and need major repairs or rehabilitation work, which is why they are closed. Kasinga gave the following updates on their statuses:
I-15 at Valley Wells (outside of Baker): This rest area was rebuilt about 10 years ago, but the well was not replaced during the rehabilitation project due to the cost, Kasinga said. The well is about 50 years old and has started showing signs of failure, with sediment in the water and other problems, and it is collapsing. Caltrans is looking into an emergency project to build a new well. If Caltrans rebuilds at the same site of the current well, the agency would not have to get permits to do the work, Kasinga said. Caltrans still needs the engineering staff to determine whether they can rebuild in the same spot. If Caltrans builds a new well, it will need to get permits from multiple agencies, and that would delay the time needed to start the work. An early estimate for reopening this rest area is approximately June at the earliest.
I-15 at C.V. Kane (outside of Barstow): The rest area on the northbound I-15 is fairly new and was rebuilt four or five years ago, Kasinga said. The southbound I-15 rest area is currently under construction and being rebuilt and is expected to open this summer. The pump on the northbound I-15 broke and was repaired. Caltrans is awaiting water test results and once they are cleared, the rest area will reopen soon.
Caltrans has projects planned to rebuild rest areas on I-40 and I-10, according to Kasinga, who noted that water (well or pump) and electrical issues routinely plague the rest areas. Vandalism also causes closures, she said.
During closure periods, Caltrans asks that motorists and truckers use facilities and restrooms in local towns along their route and find safe places to rest. Caltrans wishes to apologize for the inconveniences, said Kasinga, adding, But we also are not able to open the rest areas under the existing conditions until the repairs are made and the rest areas are safe for public use.
Cars illegally parked
Last month we published a letter from a reader in Hemet who complained about cars with out-of-state license plates parked in her neighborhood for the past two years. She asked how to report them
We told our reader that vehicle owners who move to California must register their out-of-state vehicles within 20 days of establishing residency in California.
On the Road advised her about the CHPs CHEATERS program to report information for vehicles registered out-of-state if its believed the vehicles should be registered in California.
In response, another reader, Kyle A. Patrick, a local attorney, wrote to add that if the vehicles have been parked continuously, then there is a second way to have them removed. He noted that most cities have ordinances that prohibit vehicles from being parked on the street for more than 72 consecutive hours. In Hemet, Patrick said, a city ordinance prohibits parking for a period exceeding 72 consecutive hours.
My home city of Eastvale has a similar ordinance, and I would bet that most cities in the area do as well, he noted.
Thanks to our reader for adding more information to the discussion.
They tax you to death, and then take away the stuff you use.
Heaven isn’t it.
Sh!thole policies.
If rest stops voted Democrat, the funding to keep them operational would appear.
If I report Hillary Clinton’s crimes, will they arrest her?
I don’t think there’s any roadside parks open in TX anymore. They were closed to save money.
Crime? Illegals using them for housing? Oh, wait, if they were, they’d be open. But only to them.
When I moved out of California, one of my first official acts was to get the California plates off the car.
This is how it begins.
Kalifornia will be the new Venezuela very soon......................
STD vector control.
Have the illegal aliens established residency?
Funny they want to crack down on people from out of state, but not people from out of country.
Stop at the new mega store in yermo and the alien beef jerky places lots safer and support your free market folks
But illegals are cool and demand respect and money?? F that.
When I drove out of San Diego last in 2011 all the rest stops were closed then as well. I assumed funding priorities.
Califonia no longer maintains its roadsides. Test it yourself, leave a spare tire on a California highway roadside, come back a month later and it will still be there. You can’t support millions of Mexico’s worst and still have cash for infrastructure.
Same reason that when local school boards overspend they threaten to cut football and band.
I knew a guy whose property overlooked a freeway rest stop along the I-5 in Southern California. He and his neighbors got sick of seeing gay truck drivers engage in romantic interludes there. Thankfully that rest stop was closed.
During that time I heard a local talk host who had contacts in the State Police say that they were closed because they were notorious pickup spots for fags. Not just pickup...but doing their thing in the wooded area within easy sight of anyone who might stop.
When I lived out in the Midwest they would close them because they turned-up on nationally circulated lists of gay hookup places and became so overrun with public debauchery as to pose a health hazard.
I dont think theres any roadside parks open in TX anymore. They were closed to save money.
You have not been to Texas lately there peckerhead! The rest areas with bathrooms and even free WiFi are abundant. All along I-35 and I-20, Im sure others can share if theyve seenthem on I -10 as well. Roadside parks are on the farm to market roads. Weve got them all, not like that shithole state of commie-fornia!
These rest stops have turned into truckers sleep-over spots with free services. The economy is booming in Texas and our good Governor is helping to keep the windfall going.
