Virginia Social Worker: I Was Fired Over My Concealed Carry Permit

The National Rifle Association has filed a lawsuit over Florida’s new gun law, which increases the age to buy rifles in the state from 18 to 21. Republican Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill yesterday. Yet, the pro-Second Amendment organization should consider joining another lawsuit in Virginia, where a social worker was reportedly fired for being a concealed carry holder. On Facebook yesterday, Storm Durham, a social services worker, described how three Roanoke police officers escorted her out of her office. She said some of the officers had accompanied her on child services visits. Durham was also not allowed to use the bathroom on her way out due to safety concerns. On Twitter, Durham said that she’s already obtained lawyers.

Well this could get interesting. Guess someone thought the young lady might shoot a client. More on the NRA suit to follow if not already posted.

Her rights are enshrined in the Constitution.

How is this any different than firing her because she is Jewish or Christian?

Every time I hear about something like this,I think....”well there’s another good state NOT to live in”. I hope the NRA suit is highly successful & something gets done with this situation in Virginia as well.

If she was a social services worker, I’m guessing that she has found herself in some fairly interesting neighborhoods while on the job.

If that’s her, she has never done anything wrong.

Rights? If she worked for the state, “She don’t need no steenkin’ rights!”

My oldest found herself in “interesting” neighborhoods in New Orleans while doing some work along those lines but was prohibited from protecting herself. She doesn’t do that any more.

Back in my days as a CPS, I would have done anything to be able to carry. There are very scary people out there who don’t appreciate you sticking your nose in their business. I was threated more than once and would ask a friendly cop to tag along for safety on the rare occasion. The safety concern was one of the reasons I quit. It is truly amazing these workers aren’t being killed every day of the week.

She’s cute enough ... I’ve known a few “social workers” over the years, and they all were higher than average on the crazy scale.

You are correct. Some of the encounters out daughter told us about...........YIKES! Sadly, there are people walking the streets that are truly dangerous.

Was she fired for carrying or for just for having the permit?

Reads like she wasn’t packing at the time 3 cops escorted her from the office.

According to the article, she has never brought a weapon to the office. Not sure about on client visits, which is not mentioned. If she merely has the permit, and has never carried her weapon while doing her job, either on state property or at an official client visit, what difference SHOULD it make?

It says she was fired for having a CHP. I do not see where it says she was carrying “on the job”. I can see being fired if you are not allowed to carry on the job and do not follow the rule. (this does not mean I agree). We need more information.

I followed the link to her Facebook post, and it sounds like there is more to this story. That her boyfriend brought a gun to the office when they were having drama and threatened a co-worker of hers, that she had problems at work and tended to lock herself in her office and freak out, and that she wasn't fired because of the CCW (other workers there have them too) she was only escorted out by cops because of the CCW.

And I have to say, I don't like the tone of her post. It's sort of I'm a little blonde white girl, I shouldn't be treated this way. Why she has to mention that she's white (twice) I do not know.
