In the United States, weve arrived at a pair of mutually exclusive convictions: that liberal, capitalist democracies are guaranteed by their nature to succeed and that in our Trumpist moment they seem to be failing in deeply unsettling ways. For liberals and by this I mean inheritors of the long liberal tradition, not specifically those who might also be called progressives efforts to square these two notions have typically combined expressions of high anxiety with reassurances that, if we only have the right attitude, everything will set itself aright.
Hanging on and hoping for the best is certainly one approach to rescuing the best of liberalism from its discontents, but my answer is admittedly more ambitious: Its time to give socialism a try.

Right.
This empty, vacant piece does not even manage to express a coherent reason WHY we should try Socialism.
Ummmmmmmmm. Didn’t Hitler try socialism too?
I think it is time to give free markets a try!
Well, she has a point. Socialism is very effective at introducing nation-wide poverty, which is the epitome of "equality."
You had it for most of eight years and only diminished the economy and stepped upon freedoms. Relocate to a socialist paradise if you don’t like it here!
No clicks for the ComPost.
I can only assume the title is sarcasm (I didn’t read the article because I’m not really into satire and if the title is not sarcasm it’s too stupid to bother wasting my time on.)
“Democratic Socialism”, I like that! An oxymoron if I have ever heard of one. Does that mean that when it all fails disastrously, we all get to vote out the idiots who fooled us into swallowing their lies? Based on the Stalinist track record of even the immediate past, that would probably be a “no”. Socialism always will decline and degenerate into chaos and violence. At least we have that to look forward to.
Wow! That money statement mirrors the stated goals of Mussolini’s fascist movement in Italy.
We have a ‘mixed economy’ with market base activity supporting the redistribution of wealth. The current Socialists (wearing TShirts reading ‘For the People/ By the People’) do not realize once People Who Work for a Living get tired of supporting People Who Vote for a Living, it’s the end.
(See Venezuela)
That should read the modern face of fascism.
Her reasoning is the same as was used by Mussolini and his Italian fascist movement.
Capitalism is the worst economic system in the world - except for all the others.
She can’t even right but she’s going to change the world.
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Sir Winston Churchill
"Since this is an era when many people are concerned about 'fairness' and 'social justice,' what is your 'fair share' of what someone else has worked for?" - Thomas Sowell
"A nation of well informed men, who have been taught to know and to prize the rights that God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins." - Benjamin Franklin
"Failed socialism does not result in reform but in more socialism." FReeper nathanbedford
"Income redistribution in any form is an outrage and violation of Natural Law." - FReeper Jacquerie
We could do it with a distinctly America first flavor, let’s call it National Socialism!
This young woman advocates a state taeover at a time when the Chinese are trying to shrink their state-owned sector.
I’m not an apologist for President Xi but he understands reality far better than this young woman does.
Its not possible for the state to run everything - not if it wants to give people freedom of choice and a higher quality of life.
Those things can only be delivered by the market.
