In the United States, we’ve arrived at a pair of mutually exclusive convictions: that liberal, capitalist democracies are guaranteed by their nature to succeed and that in our Trumpist moment they seem to be failing in deeply unsettling ways. For liberals — and by this I mean inheritors of the long liberal tradition, not specifically those who might also be called progressives — efforts to square these two notions have typically combined expressions of high anxiety with reassurances that, if we only have the right attitude, everything will set itself aright.
Hanging on and hoping for the best is certainly one approach to rescuing the best of liberalism from its discontents, but my answer is admittedly more ambitious: It’s time to give socialism a try.

Not to be confused for a totalitarian nostalgist, I would support a kind of socialism that would be democratic and aimed primarily at decommodifying labor, reducing the vast inequality brought about by capitalism, and breaking capital’s stranglehold over politics and culture.,
The geriatric argument that "real" socialism has never been tried.
Socialism is not compatible with anything that is good.
Its Socialism or Communism for DemocRATs or Bust!
For crying out loud, even the Communist Chinese have a market economy!
They know Communism doesn’t work. We couldn’t do it any better than them.
That’s nothing. I support the distribution of pink, magic, fairy dust (the new stuff - not that old stuff) and slivers off of Gandalf’s staff.
Cause we need some kind of magic to force rational cogitation in millennial fools. Something besides lead, which I would really prefer to avoid.
Because it works so well in North Korea and Venezuela.

Where wheelbarrow loads of cash are a common sight;
Where even that much cash is totally worthless;
Where even if the money were worth something, there is nothing to buy;
Where government issued food cards are handed out on the basis of political loyalty;
Where anti-government sentiment brings government issued thugs to take back the food cards and;
where persistent anti-government sentiments bring the government issued tugs back to take whatever food you have.
Yea! Real socialism at last!

I’m willing to give socialists a trial. I expect they will still go to prison, but, hey, they should at least get a “fair trial” first.
