Okay—so I guess we should give The New York Times credit for writing a piece about the AR-15 that distinguishes it from its military cousin—the M16—which has the ability to fire more than one round per trigger pull. It has the ability for automatic fire (selective fire), which the civilian AR-15 does not. A civilian can own an automatic firearm if they go through and pass a background check, pay the National Firearms Act tax stamp, and have their firearm catalogued into a federal database through the ATF. The process can take up to a year or longer—and the firearm being transferred has to have been manufactured prior to 1986. All new sales are banned. Oh, and did I mention that it’s exceedingly expensive to purchase such firearms. But that’s beside the point here. Where the publication goes off the rails is when they say that the AR-15 and the M16 fire high velocity rounds, so they’re similar.

I say "best", because they have openly and actively used the barrels of ink they purchase to drown the truth and they have done it well.
The NYT is nothing but sleaze-ball journalism, hiding behind a once-respectable veneer, said veneer dating back to before WWII.
The NYT has had little credibility in the real world of conservative truth since the McCarthy hearings.

AND, you have to purchase the gun, which then sits at the gun store until you go through the almost year long process.
Had a co-worker do this for a MAC-10. Now he wants to add a silencer. Even though he went through the process for the gun, he has to start all over from scratch for the silencer.And, the year wait continues.......
I’ve found that the anti-gun mob knows practically nothing about firearms other than a few scary-sounding buzz words like “high capacity”, “assault rifle”, and “weapon of war”. They know even less about crime, the law, the Constitution, and history. In a nutshell, they are ignorant of pretty much everything.
We had an antigun group just before our Revolutionary War. They said “Give us your guns.” The patriots shot them.

That spirit is no longer with us. I attended a patriot's day celebration in Lexington (or maybe it was Concord) Home of the "shot heard round the world" about 25 years ago and there was some guy selling little replica muskets - we're talking about 4 inch long toys. Some kid wanted one, and his mother went ballistic started screaming at the guy for selling guns (note he was selling TOYS) and how dare he, etc. He politely told her if she didn't like what he was selling don't buy it. At that point I wandered off, but I believe that insane hatred of firearms is the spirit that inhabits most massholes today. Obama got about 61% of the vote in 2012 and Hillary got about the same in 2016. NO MA county has less than 50% of the vote go Democrat.
I also have a co-worker buying a Mac 10. He’s paying $8,000 for a gun the guy bought for about $500 in 1983. He’s waiting for his tax stamps for the gun and suppressor. The paperwork wasn’t as onerous as I thought it was. You apparently no longer need a letter from the head of local law enforcement.
