Donald Trump: Police Should Have Taken Guns From Florida Shooter ‘Whether They Had The Right Or Not’
Huffpost ^ | 2/28/18 | Paige Lavender

President Donald Trump criticized police for not doing more to prevent a mass shooting at a Florida high school, arguing they should have taken the shooter’s guns away “whether they had the right or not.”

During a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers on gun control Thursday, Trump suggested guns should be taken away “immediately from people that you can judge easily are mentally ill,” alluding to the Florida shooter, who had undergone a psychiatric evaluation in 2016 but was ultimately not hospitalized.

“The police saw that he was a problem, they didn’t take any guns away,” Trump said. “Now that could have been policing, but they should have taken them away anyway, whether they had the right or not.”

He doubled down on the claim later in the meeting after Vice President Mike Pence spoke about due process and giving local law enforcement more leeway to obtain a court order to collect firearms from potentially dangerous people.

“Mike, take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system,” Trump said. “A lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early.”

-- There is no law authorizing the police to take the guns away form someone who isn't threatening anyone. --

"You can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride."

See thousands of firearms confiscated after Katrina.

All it takes is brute force. Piece of cake.

I agree with Trump, waaay too many in their face warnings that this time bomb was ready to detonate. Dozens of glaring red flags.

And you’re supporting and defending Cruz’s second amendment rights? Looken sharp Whitey.

yep. even works in a weird way to his advantage that some on our side are becoming outraged. it makes the left’s fear even more palatable.

Trump is not an idiot. And his conversation is not impeachable. He is talking about ideas, not implementing them.

But now the left has to respond. And after they’ve squeezed that “you can’t take away due process” toothpaste out of the tube, it won’t go back in! Then Trump can say, “You’re right. Scratch that.”

Winning.

I know that Trump is just frustrated and venting and that nothing will come of this, but someone really needs to explain just how wrong this line of thinking is.

...

I think he knows. But from a political point of view he’s sucking away all his opponent’s oxygen.

Read up on due process. There is no law authorizing the police to take the guns away form someone who isn’t threatening anyone.

Say What Now?

Cruz was all over the nap making verbal and physical threats. His family called the police - after Cruz pointed a gun at their heads - begging them to come take the guns away.

Of course the cops did nothing. And 17 people died.

Tell that to Robert Finicum.....

Tell that to Randy Weaver

Tell that to Ismael Lopez

Tell that to Tyler Gottwalt..........and the list goes on.

Sorry Dragnet, expansion of existing laws to the point it violates our 2nd Amendment rights is not an acceptable solution......

Failure of govt. at not only the local, state and Federal level is not an excuse to broaden the scope of government in order fix a problem they created.........

There were dozens of incidents where he threatened lives. He held a gun to the head of his mother, he held a gun to the head of his brother. He called the sheriff himself and threatened lives. They should have taken him to court. If he had been convicted he could not have bought that gun

Now they have to defend the rights of gun owners' due process!

Sad when the Democrats are the ones defending due process from a Republican administration.

If a doctor says someone is capable of harming himself or others based on an evaluation, they do take the guns away until further evaluation can be made. I think this is what Trump was saying.

“I like taking the guns early.”

So did King George III. It didn’t go well.

You missed the point.

Try not to let your emotions rule your brain. That never ends well.

Watch the Dumbocrats block a sensible bill because they don't get universal background checks (and President Trump was very dismissive of that.)

Unless you are in Louisiana during a hurricane event. Then the cops are very certain you lose your rights, even though those kinds of situations are exactly the reason why many of us own firearms.

Why not have charged him in one of the dozen encounters?! And with his mental state, even he called the police on himself, police failed to act. No need for illegal action, just follow or use existing laws!

I'll stand corrected, but I think Cruz provided compelling evidence both to doctors/psychiatrists and law enforcement that he was a danger to himself and others - Thus the ability to temporarily take away weapons.
