The recent gas tax hike in California enacted to fund transportation projects could face tough sledding in the face of a repeal effort.
Likely voters were nearly evenly split on the issue with 47% saying they favor repeal, while 48% said they oppose it, in a poll released Feb. 7 by the Public Policy Institute of California.
The creator of the initiative to repeal a gas tax hike and vehicle fee increase approved by the state legislature last year to support transportation projects said signature gathering efforts are right on track.

I recently was on travel there, and stopped at a 'Dollar Store'. It turned out to be a high minority area, as I was the only white guy there. Anyway, a Senior African American woman was in front of the store collecting signatures against the gas tax - I was very surprised ...
Socialism is great, as long as other people pay for it.
This is the sort of momentary burst of outrage they experience from time to time that elects people like Arnold.
“This is the sort of momentary burst of outrage they experience from time to time that elects people like Arnold.”
Ahnold the Awful was an opportunist when we recalled Gray Davis. If he had not run, Tom McClintock would most likely have become governor, and we might have dodged the second “Brown Bullet!”
Ha. Zackly.
The price of regular gas is $3.59 this morning here in California. Just drove past the station.
The price of our gasoline due to Californicator Taxes and a sales tax, plus federal Taxes make our gasoline so very expensive.
People know that very little of our new Gas Tax will ever be used to rebuild a road or over/under pass on any of our roads.
It won’t be repealed by the Voters. They are Sheep.
Gas is over $3.25 a Gallon and the increase is blamed on the mean Oil Companies, not the Government that makes more money off a Gallon of Gas than the Companies producing the product.
One guy on the Radio in San Diego is trying to make this Gas Tax thing an issue. When it Passed along with the increased Car Registration Fees I didn’t hear any Democrats / Media (same thing) complaining that these new Taxes and Fees would hurt the Poor Working Class.
Meanwhile the La Raza Legislature is passing new Gun Control Laws every day. The Sheep bleat and the Constitution weeps.
For the most part, I’m okay with “use taxes”, as long as the money actually goes toward the product I’m using. In this case roads and traffic infrastructure. It’s income and property taxes that get me all riled up.
That’s .80/gal. higher than PA and our gas taxes here are insane.
My formerly great state has over run with illegal aliens and Socialists from the east coast and they have formed a strong Socialsit coalition with nuts in the SF Bay area and LA that can not be overcome. Anything a Democrat does is good to these people and anything a Republican does is bad. If Jerry Brown signed a $10 a gallon gas tax, they’d support it. If Donald trump reduced the Federal gas tax by 5 cents they’d bitch and moan....These people are really f***ed in the head.
The problem is greed
Legislatures provide taxes for a specified purpose but look the other way when the executive mis appropriates the money. In essence, a tax that would be opposed is ok when the funds become an appropriation from a protected use.
I’d be shocked IF THIS Democrat majority running our State into the ground actually uses these specific taxes squeezed from our souls for infrastructure/road repair. There’s no doubt in my mind Jerry wants the money for a Bronzed label on the base of the statue to his legacy, the Jerry Brown Moonbeam Express choo choo.
$2.32 in Colorado Springs.
Right thought, wrong conclusion. I forget what percentage, but I believe it was less than half, goes to transportation. The REAL purpose of this bill was to shore up PERS, the state pension system. To this day the media is going along with the dishonest labeling. Im going to go out on a limb and predict that the tax repeal will qualify for the ballot, notwithstanding customary shenanigans by the secty of state and atty general to try to keep it off, and that the voters will pass it. Further the prospect of actually have a victory for once will energize what Republican base we have and that Republican incumbents in the house wil generally be ok.
To fill up a 16 gallon tank cost you $37.12.
My cost for the same 16 gallon tank in California is $57.45.
What did you do with the extra $20.32?
“Any Republicans left in CA need to run against the ‘Gas Tax’. “
There is not one single real Republican politician remaining on CA.
The closest we have are Nunes and McClintock. Both of them are in danger of losing their seats and will face a tough election.
Observation: The more Republicans moderate the more likely they are to lose.
I live in McClintocks district. BTW he did us the honor of attending my sons Eagle Scout Court of Honor and gave a really nice speech. I think hes going to be ok in the election. Likewise Doug LaMalfa. They share Placer County. Last time I looked a few years ago the second most Republican County in the state after Sutter County in percentage terms
“Thats .80/gal. higher than PA and our gas taxes here are insane.”
Here they also tax the refiners by forcing them to purchase “carbon credits”. Same with every business in the supply chain.
And just try to get a permit to put a tank in the ground. Better have significant insurance.
Additionally they compel the refineries to reformulate the mix twice per year so that it’s optimized for “cleanliness”, according to season.
All the hidden taxes of stupidity and animus.
Coming soon to a state near you.
The gas tax increased to 30 cents per gallon from 18, on Nov. 1, and vehicle registration increases of at least $25 kicked in Jan. 1.a 12 cent a gallon increase works out to $1.68 for 14 gallons (14 gallons is a common gas tank size). The *total* state tax is $4.20 per 14 gallon tank, at a tank a week, that's $218.40 a year.
