There’s been a mysterious change in Trump's demeanor — and no one knows why
Business Insider ^ | Feb. 2, 2018 | Allan Smith

President Donald Trump has been relatively subdued in recent weeks — and his poll numbers have spiked.

The trend can be traced back to the passing of the news cycle about his "shithole countries" remark from the middle of last month. In the weeks that followed, he has only posted a handful of acerbic or unnecessary tweets — virtually unprecedented for such a length of time — and delivered a series of speeches that remained on message.

It's a frequent occurrence for Trump to initiate a days- or weeks-long news cycle on a subject unrelated to the message he and his administration were trying to drive home.

And the trend has been noticed by observers.

"I have noticed," Alex Conant, a Republican strategist and communications director for Sen. Marco Rubio's 2016 presidential campaign, told Business Insider in an email. "The president's shown more message discipline in the last month than he did in all of 2017. It's directly correlated with general improvement in his poll numbers."

Conant is right about the correlation between Trump's weeks of relative calm and the improved polling. On Thursday, Trump's approval rating reached its highest point in months, according to the RealClearPolitics aggregate of polls...

I’d suggest that reality is driving the poll numbers, and relative silence is due to the news cycle doing what he wants it to do at present. It never ceases to amaze me that people continue clinging to the notion that Trump is all artifice. Trump is Trump, he does what he does. It’s been amazingly effective thus far, in a very unconducive environment.

Trump has been on defense up to the memo being released.

He is now on offense.

That takes a different type of concentration.

He does not feel the need to control the message right now.

He is letting the FISA and FBI crap take the stage, as it should.

He is also letting congress stew on DACA. He does not need to say anything right now about that.

He only tweets outrageous / unruly stuff when he needs to distract the fools in the press.

I assume he’s been busy preparing for the SOTU, oh and with some FBI members threatening to ‘get him’ I am sure he’s had a lot on his mind.

Still doing a great job- i hope he’s preparing to “get people” in return, by firing people and arresting them where needed.

Rosenstein sounds like he should be first.

There’s a learning curve, even for the presidency. Obama never experienced it because all he heard was glowingly positive feedback, no matter what he did. Even if it had to be made up.

Then he’ll get bored! We must keep our CINC in things to do.

Not mysterious at all.

Learning the top law enforcement agencies in the country conspired to frame, undermine and compromise your presidential campaign and then the Presidency of the United States, is a sobering experience and should be enough to make every American recoil in disgust.

Business Insider is anti-Trump. Here are some of their other (more prominent) headlines:

'Politics of hysteria': The much-anticipated Nunes memo left experts underwhelmed

The Nunes memo fails to answer the key question it is supposed to address

Devin Nunes admits he didn't view the underlying intelligence his memo was based on

ETC.

I’d say the burdens of the office are catching up with him. _Everything_ demands his attention and a decision made. Obama was probably great with delegating tasks to others and signing off on whatever was put in front of him while he sank baskets or was binge-watching something. Trump is probably looking over everything to make sure nothing is being put over on him.

The whole immigration, border-secuirty, DACA debate would probably be enough to break most mortals. Anything he does either brands him a racist or establishment sell-out. He might be hearing it from the State Department with ambassadors in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa being called out to explain “Trump’s words”—never mind that Schumer was the one who claimed them.

Not to mention the Korean ulcer and the potential for disaster with the upcoming games in Seoul.

He needs stalwart aides and advisors and you can bet those are in short supply in DC.

I think that’s a good theory.

I have some additional theories:

1. The memo and all the related repercussions from it have taken up all of his time.
2. He is in grave danger from his enemies now that they have been exposed. The danger is real and sobering. (Not that he wasn’t already sober and serious. But knowing what kind of threats you are exposed to has got to have an effect, even on someone as strong and savvy as Trump.)
3. The “acerbic and unnecessary” tweets have fulfilled their purpose. When he has another purpose they would help with, he may resume them.
