Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase to create health care company

WASHINGTON — Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase & Co. will create an independent health care company that is “free from profit-making incentives” that will aim to reduce healthcare costs for their U.S. workers.

The focus of the company will be technology solutions “that will provide U.S. employees and their families with simplified high-quality and transparent healthcare at a reasonable cost,” a news release says.

“The ballooning costs of healthcare act as a hungry tapeworm on the American economy. Our group does not come to this problem with answers. But we also do not accept it as inevitable. Rather, we share the belief that putting our collective resources behind the country’s best talent can, in time, check the rise in health costs while concurrently enhancing patient satisfaction and outcomes,” said Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, in the news release.

Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase Jamie Dimon said the effort could potentially benefit all Americans.

“Our people want transparency, knowledge and control when it comes to managing their healthcare,” Dimon said. “The three of our companies have extraordinary resources, and our goal is to create solutions that benefit our U.S. employees, their families and, potentially, all Americans.”

Ha! This is JP Morgan. If you use too much health care, you will be on the same list as the people whose salaries are too high for the amount of work they do. When they need to make headcount cuts, you’ll be at the head of the line.

Legal? No, but you get 6 months severance if you don’t sue.

Only illness I’ve every been hospitalized for was the flu, for complications. Got my shot that year, too. FWIW, I get my shot not just for me, but for everyone else I love. If I can lessen their risk by doing so, works for me :-)

My bet is, especially if they’re really anti-profit, they’re going to have to mandate employees using their insurance, make it a condition of employment.

Why would they want profit in this case?

Because excellence costs money? :-)

But, hey, if folks want something modeled on the VA or NHS, they can have that. God help them.

I see nothing to indicate that they are modeling this after the VA or NHS. They are seeking higher efficiency and lower costs.

Just a guess, but their not-for-profit healthcare business will direct business to FOR-PROFIT businesses owned by JP Morgan, Amazon, and Berkshire-Hathaway.

This is an effort to disrupt the healthcare market, which could frankly use some disruption.

It’s their apparent problem with profit that gives me pause.

This is for their own employees. Why would they want profit? They would only be paying it to themselves.

If successful in lowering their healthcare costs, this will increase their profits in their main businesses.

Seems like a good idea. The railroads have their own Social Security system. I wonder if they have their own healthcare system too.

Profit is not a dirty word. With profits you can pay for great medical professionals, technology, service. With profit you can promote innovation and efficiency, reward excellence. All of those things I want with regard to my healthcare needs.

Yeah, that'll make it easy to recruit the best doctors and stuff.

But one thing I liked, was Kaiser Permanente. A very well operated Healthcare company in my view.

It used to be. My father had with them 45 years, and just dumped them. He said service level and quality had been declining for a number of years.
