The question is not what is earth, but why? Why create the conditions that lead to such horror, then just sit back and say, “well, you have free will, make a choice.” It is nonsensical. You’ve created everything and know everything that will happen, which means you created evil and know the outcome. So why create it? There are two possible answers...
Yeah, that was something. The camp guards were masters at deception.
God was watching in pain.
We have no idea how much evil was actually done in the 2 centuries previous to WWII.
God is a righteous and just God. Every evil done demands repayment.
When he was on the Cross he paid for all of the sins of man himself.
Where it is written of the bowls being poured out in the Apocalypse, I think that WWII was in one of those bowls. But that is just me.
You are right, the idea is nonsensical, as is most of religious dogma.
Perhaps you’re drawing the wrong picture of God’s design on this earth, one that right now you do not agree with. Why do you stick with it?
Wake up! What does all this tell you? Maybe that some religious ideas make no sense at all?
I cannot begin to answer your question, and I suspect no human can. We can make surmise, some of them more educated than others, but that's about the limit of the human mind on such matters. If it were possible for men to fully understand and explain God's motives, deeds or what may appear to be His lack of intervention, then He wouldn't really be God.
“Ordinary Men” is an interesting book about a Germaam Ordnungspolizei involved with the Holocaust. The unit was from Hamburg and one of their early assignments was to “relocate” Hamburg Jews east. They brought all their luggage, etc. One policeman recalled that they were none the wiser, having no reason to question that they were in fact simply relocating people, until they reached and saw their destination.
"Good men" stepped forward to defeat this evil. Doing good takes more than just wishing and hoping and it is not instantaneous.
Who is it "up to"? It is up to YOU.

Never saw the film, thanks for the link.
Will say a prayer for him tonight. These guys were braver and tougher than any whining NFL player.
In 2006 My wife and I visited Dachau in the winter. We were freezing in our heavy coats as we trudged through the snow from the barracks to the crematorium. How these people survived in threads with almost no food I will never know.
Jesus said that Satan is the ruler of this world.

So that your love of God and others is due entirely to free will.
Have you ever seen "Come and See (Idi i Smotri)"?
I’ve seen it. It’s pretty rough stuff.
You - with your pea-sized brain - have no idea.
Excellent movie! Thank You for posting it.
Pea-sized brain...hmmmm, such a religiously based charitable response from you. No surprise, since the most religious people (any religion) are often the least tolerant.
By questioning God Himself, you are sitting in judgment of the Almighty, which is the absolute epitome of hubris.
I repeat: you have no idea. But one day you will. But don't take it from a nobody such as myself: "at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:10).
You have no idea what my worldview is. In my original post on this thread, I asked questions in the face of monumental evil shown in the Russian film of the liberation of Auschwitz. Monumental isn't even a strong enough word. My thought while watching it was, "where was God in all that horror."
Others responded kindly and informatively. You were the only person who chose to be insulting. So again, you showed zero charity and thoughtful guidance to someone who is questioning. That is the absolute epitome of intolerance, some thing Jesus Christ, The Lord, would abhor.
