‘Feminist Science’ event teaches researchers how to do ‘socially just science’

Scientific inquiry has long been considered a stalwart of observation and objectivity, but one effort underway by some researchers prioritizes applying a “critical social justice lens into science,” according to an upcoming event at UC Santa Cruz.

The event, what organizers dubbed “Feminist Science,” describes the effort as a method that infuses social justice, inclusion and equality into science to advance progressive social change.

The workshop is hosted by Free Radicals, described as “a collective that envisions an open and responsible science that works toward progressive social change.”

The mission of the Free Radicals is to enact political and social change by advocating scientists “think through the hidden assumptions in their methodological approaches and challenges researchers to think more deeply about the political implications of their work,” its website states.

The Free Radicals could not be reached on Tuesday by The College Fix to discuss how they would respond to those who may view their effort as a manipulation of science to advance an identity politics-driven agenda.

The event is sponsored by UC Santa Cruz’s Science and Justice Research Center, self-described as a “globally unique endeavor” that works to build on the school’s “historic commitments to socioecological justice and strengths in science studies and interdisciplinary research.”

I guess we should “mansplain” to her that science and technology aren’t the same thing.

Without science staying science, which is where modern climatology has also failed (it is a technological pursuit of SWAGs) we can’t have a technology which works.

Technology may be used for social ends, certainly. And we may debate about what ends are worth pursuing.

We can’t invent our own truth though.

I remember when “science” meant “the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.” I used to respect science back when it was all about learning the truth.

By definition, “an open and responsible science that works toward progressive social change” is not a science.

So instead of theory supported by data gathered from experimentation/observation we have this is the answer based on what the gender studies professor down the hall says it should be.

Wonderful...

by advocating scientists “think through the hidden assumptions in their methodological approaches and challenges researchers to think more deeply about the political implications of their work,” its website states.

Translation: no scientific findings which contradict Progressive orthodoxy will be tolerated. Do not even try to question global warming, or find any genetic basis to intelligence.

I’m not finished laughing at feminist Math, which teaches that the correct answer to a math problem is the one that makes you feel best about yourself. The Anthro Dept at UMass destroyed itself when it turned to feminist anthropology some years ago. Feminist anthro teaches that only women have made advances in anthro.

I wonder how many members of university faculties and administrations in this country have heard the name Trofim Lysenko.

True. The article states the questions to be asked is for whom do we do science and why.

These days I’m afraid the answers are we do science to get grants and we do it for the ones who can pay us the biggest grants.
