Left says Dems caved on shutdown
The Hill ^ | Jan 22, 2018 | By Rafael Bernal

Progressives are hammering Sen. Minority Leader Charles Schumer

(D-N.Y.) for his agreement with Senate Republican leadership to end the government shutdown on Monday.

Even House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

(D-Calif.) has spoken out against the deal, saying there was no reason to support it.

“I don’t see that there’s any reason –– I’m speaking personally and hearing from my members –– to support what was put forth,” Pelosi said at a press briefing shortly before Schumer signaled Senate Democrats would agree to it.

Activists took a harsher tone.

“It’s official: Chuck Schumer

is the worst negotiator in Washington – even worse than Trump,” said Murshed Zaheed, political director at CREDO, a progressive advocacy group.

“Any plan to protect Dreamers that relies on the word of serial liars like [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell

[R-Ky.], [House Speaker] Paul Ryan

[R-Wisc.] or Donald Trump

is doomed to fail,” Zaheed added.

Schumer and McConnell brokered a deal to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government until Feb. 8 in exchange for a compromise from Senate Republican leadership to hold a vote on DACA-replacement legislation by that date.

Activists were incensed at the deal, as it includes no guarantees that a bill will pass — nor does it tie an immigration bill to a must-pass measure to give Democrats leverage.

The agreement also includes no guarantees that a potential Senate agreement on DACA could see a vote in the House.

Of course not. His Senate seat is probably safe, but not his leadership position.

Thank you President Trump for showing Republicans how to fight the Dims! OK, so we have another battle coming up but the Dims know that they’ll be blamed for being obstructionists and not being able to pay the military, etc.

Schumer is worried about infrastructure dollars coming to NY. If Democrats win the house in November, that bill will never see the light of day. The faster DACA can be done, the faster the Infrastructure bill can come up.

Generally when “progressives” hate something it’s good for America.

My guess: When Shumer was summoned to the WH last week, he was told he would be allowed to pretend to resist until today in order to look like he was really resisting. But he was told that on Monday, he needed to back off. Or else.

I hope the dems shut down the government every few weeks over DACA. Their polling must have told them this is very bad. I hope they continue the same course of action, over and over again until the mid-terms.

We can only imagine how awful for them were their focus groups and any valid polling.

That one will cost more than Fed employees money. Worse outcome for Dems.

My guess is the Schumer saw this shutdown as a loser, and is going to plan B.

After the clean immigration bill fails, with a No vote in the Senate, or a Trump veto, the Democrats will go right back to a shutdown with more ammo against the GOP.

They're not caving, They're doing a strategic retreat. It's Dunkirk.

I bet they had weekend polling data that showed they were being blamed for it, so they caved pronto!..................

Indeed. "Schumer Shutdown" is much easier to say than "Trump Shutdown." For once, the Rats caved (for now).

I agree - Let Trump do the gloating. The SOTU speech is going to be great.

Trump: "Isn't great the Gov'ts not shutdown?"

DUmpers saying “we got the best deal we could”... Which by my reckoning is what we used to describe as “diddly squat”.

Schumer is a choker, we always knew he would choke.

What kind of DACA deal could possibly pass SCOTUS if SCOTUS already ruled it is an illegal action. This would have to be a major immigration re-write.

Not winning kicking the can just a short way.

I agree. I wanted the government shutdown until we have a full years funding bill that stands alone from everything else.

Trump is being conned into doing exactly what the Republicans have allowed time and time again under Obama.
