On Jan. 1, a woman told the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 Office she left her car running with her 7-month-old child inside as she went into the Shell gas station located in the 21500 block of Aldine Westfield — which is northeast Harris County. While inside the store, an unknown man got into her car and took off with the baby inside. Deputies began immediately searching for the suspect and were able to find the baby left on the side of the road a few miles away from the gas station. The baby had no injuries and was reunited with the mother... In Texas, it is against the law to leave a vehicle unattended while it is running.

Suspect looks like a black male.

Left the baby on the side of the road. It's freezing! Punishment should be leaving him on the street to freeze.

How hard to take your keys and baby with you when you “just run into the store”?

What if it had been a baby theft and not a car theft?

We all make misjudgements from time to time. I’ll bet there’s no one person here who hasn’t done something that stupid. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes. Hopefully she will too.

Perp should be left on the side of the road, naked all night.

In very cold weather a lot of car thieves hang out at gas stations in the early morning just waiting for someone to leave their car running while they go inside the station. Don’t leave your car running in this situation unless you can also lock it. My car won’t lock if the key is in the ignition.

He only wanted a quick score on a stolen car. Kidnapping will draw a whole lot more attention.

Leaving the car running with a baby in it.
Probably a better choice would be locking the car for a minute.
Probably a better choice, not putting yourself in a situation where you have to take your baby to the convenience store. Sheesh.

BS. I have never done anything as stupid as leaving my children alone in a running car!
And I'll bet there's MANY more like me on FR.

Well, there WAS the time I left my car running with my rescue wolverines in it. Strangely, no one else touched it.

There is no information about whether the car was locked or not. I am guessing not, since it would require breaking a window or some skill to defeat the lock. That would have attracted attention. Locking also requires a second key.

If I had a baby or young child, the kid would go with me, no matter what. That’s my personal policy. I love my kids too much to take unnecessary risks with them to save myself some inconvenience.

Even empty, I cannot imagine ever leaving an unlocked, running car in a parking lot, especially with people milling around.

This is really common sense. I am amazed, even shocked, at how many purses I see left unattended in shopping carts. Some people must think they have divine protection and theft cannot happen to them.

I will step up and say I made some potentially harmful mistakes when my son was small. Never left him in a running car but, he rolled out of a cart in a store; walked out of my apartment, down the stairs and crossed the street before I knew he was missing (I thought he was with my husband). There is no feeling like it.Every horrible scenario will come to mind. The thought that your child could be harmed or killed due to your bad judgement or carelessness, is the most devastating ever. 24 years later and I still feel sick to my stomach.
Let’s blame and go after the criminal. I imagine there is nothing anyone could say about the mother that she has not thought herself.
I wish I were as perfect as everyone else is.

Lock your purse into the shopping cart with the child restraint belt and stow it under the child seat so it becomes inaccessible quickly.

Good idea. ‘Course you still need to stay close, so they won’t run off with the whole cart.
