There was also massive public health campaign to rid population of parasites in 60's and 70's. All school students were required to take parasite test. They had to submit their stool sample to be screened for parasites each year. Parasite carriers were required to take medications to eliminate parasites.

Parasites and tuberculosis were once endemic problems in S. Korea. Now N. Korean population is suffering from health crisis much worse than S. Korea used to decades ago. It is not just parasite problem. There are host of other problems. The whole country is a gigantic public health catastrophe.

This practice works just fine if all vegetables are fully cooked before consumption. The problem is some Korean meals involve the use of raw lettuce to make wraps. Washing alone doesn’t kill the parasites.

IIRC, the ROK used human feces on the crops during my time there for Uncle Sam in 1992. We were told not to eat vegetables from the farms because of the use of human waste as fertilizer. It was almost a guarantee that you’d get really sick.

It's not a problem as long as the vegetables are fully cooked before consumption. Raw salads are a definite no-no.

Those of you here in the US who eat produce from Mexico and points south, and shellfish from the Far East. might want to reconsider your choices too. But not to worry, we have the USDA out there “protecting our food supply,” not! And remember the Chinese dog food made with Melamine and Chinese dry wall that had so much formaldehyde in it that it made homeowners ill. I think N. Koreans eat vegetables anyway they can. I suspect, due to shortage of cooking fuel/coal/firewood, they have no choice but to eat raw veggies even if they don't want to.
